Afgelopen zondag, 13 februari 2022, nam ik deel aan de Woonrevolutie in Leiden, het in de reeks van woonprotesten sinds deze golf van woonstrijd in september op gang kwam. Your Local Pirates, het muzikale duo waarvan ik de helft uitmaak, was uitgenodigd voor een optreden. En er was een oproep voor een radicaal blok in het zwart en dergelijke. De aantrekkingskracht was onweerstaanbaar, burn-out of geen burn-out. Ik had mijn deelname aan het woonprotest in Delft vorige week geskipt, zodat de kans dat het me in Leiden zou lukken, maximaal was. Het lukte! Wat volgt, zijn wat indrukken.
Eerst de manifestatie. Enkele sprekers, met bijzondere toespraken uit invalshoeken die extra belichting goed konden gebruiken. Op Doorbraak lees, zie en hoor je ze.(1) Een tweetal optredens, eentje van punkband Hard Voor Weinig en eentje van Your Local Pirates. Ook dat zie je terug op Doorbraak.(2) Het ging lekker, al merk ik dat ik soms naar woorden moet zoeken in mijn praatje waarmee ik onze songs inleidde. Mijn praatje was vooral weer een shout out naar al die kraakinitiatieven die de laatste tijd opbloeien, en een aanmoediging tot meer van dit moois. Joke versterkte de boel, door de namen van die initiatieven – Ivicke, Waldeck Piermont/Autonomous Student Struggle, Croesepoesen, Hotel Mokum en Kraaienest – nog eens extra te herhalen. Daarna gingen we los. Ik hoorde flinke delen van de crowd bijval betuigen. Wet Of Geen Wet, Kraken Gaat Door! Dat zou later op de dag blijken.
Na ons optreden spoedde ik me naar het zwarte blok dat schuin links achteraan al verzamelde. Een flink aantal mensen! Spandoeken en alles. Ik werd helemaal blij van binnen toen ik me tussen deze mensen – mijn kameraden! – voegde. Ik wil me niet zien als ingevlogen muzikant die komt spelen, met de betogers als publiek. Hetzelfde geldt natuurlijk voor Joke. We zijn demonstranten die ook met liedjes de actie mogen helpen versterken, om vervolgens actief mee te doen met de demonstratie.(*)
Die demonstratie was al best bijzonder. Het Zwarte Blok liep voorop! Levendige boel. Leuzen roepen, meer leuzen roepen, het ging aan een stuk door. Ik doe maar weer eens een lijstje:

Politie zagen we niet veel. Een paar fietsagenten voorop, dat was het zo’n beetje.
We keerden terug waar we waren begonnen, bij de molen op de Lammersmarkt. Daarna gingen flink wat mensen weer op pad. Dat werd een hele groep, en na enige tijd lopen stonden we voor een kort daarvoor gekraakt pand. In die straat werd het natuurlijk gezellig. Politie kwam natuurlijk een kijkje nemen, eerst twee, later vier, vijf agenten, een motor ook en een politiewagen.
Het leek verstandig voor de grotere groep actievoerders om daar niet eindeloos te blijven, dus gingen we weer lopen. Eerst een klein rondje en weer vrij dicht langs het kraakpand, daarna weer richting binnenstad. Weer leuzen, een levendige, eigenlijk erg opgewekte boel. Een enkele kleurrijke flare, net als ook tijdens de ‘officiële’ demo trouwens. Maar deze demonstratie was natuurlijk niet aangemeld en geheel onofficieel.
Enkele agenten fietsten voor, langs en achter ons. Er verscheen een lief rookbommetje met een mooie rookpluim. De sfeer was uitstekend, maar natuurlijk moest er wel een keer een punt achter gezet worden. Dicht bij het centraal station ging een groot deel van de groep de Jumbo aldaar in. Omkleden, broodje halen, whatever, het was feitelijk de afsluiting van de demonstratie.
Op dat moment waren al hoorbare politiesirenes vlakbij gekomen, en kwam er een hele rij politiebusjes in hoog tempo aan gereden, zes of zeven telde ik er, ik ving achteraf op dat er uiteindelijk nog meer waren. Ze werden gevolgd door een ME-bus. Even later vielen twee groepen ME-ers in vol ornaat, met schilden en alles, ons van twee kanten aan. Ik zette het op een lopen, achter enkele andere een zijstraat in vluchtende kameraden aan. Ik hoorde achter me: ‘Staan blijven!’ Nou, ik dacht toch echt van niet. Doorrennen! Eventjes later bleken de ME-ers niet meer achter ons aan te rennen, konden we vaart minderen en ons verder in veiligheid brengen. We waren ontsnapt. Wrang genoeg gold dat dus niet voor veel anderen. Later hoorden we dat 24 mensen van ons gearresteerd zijn geweest. Ze zijn inmiddels vrij, maar daarmee is de repressieve kous bepaald nog niet af. Alle steun voor deze kameraden!
Later die avond zag ik de berichtgeving, zeg maar gerust de politieleugens. Ik pluk een paar dingen uit het bericht van de NOS: ‘In het centrum van Leiden zijn 23 mensen aangehouden na een woonprotest. Volgens de politie begonnen zij een onaangekondigd protest.’(3)
Opmerking: onaangekondigde protesten zijn op zichzelf helemaal niet verboden. Daar kan dus geen reden zijn voor de politieaanval. De NOS suggereert dat wel. Kan iemand de NOS op de hoogte stellen van het geldende demonstratierecht?
De NS vervolgt: ‘Toen agenten probeerden de demonstratie te ontbinden “een grimmige sfeer”. Ook zou er met stenen zijn gegooid.’
Drie opmerkingen.
1 De politie kan volgens de wet helemaal geen demonstratie ontbinden, dat kan juridisch gezien alleen de burgemeester.
2 De politie heeft ook op geen enkel moment duidelijk gemaakt aan ons dat we de demonstratie moesten ontbinden, de enige communicatie in die zin was de ME-aanval zelf – maar toen was de demonstratie dus al voorbij en zaten mensen in de Jumbo.
3 De ‘grimmige sfeer’ ontstond precies door de ME-aanval. Tot op dat moment was de sfeer opgewekt, strijdlustig maar geenszins ‘grimmig’.
4 Ik heb de hele optocht deelgenomen, dan weer in het midden, dan weer wat meer vooraan. Ik heb geen steen gegooid zien worden. Als het zou zijn gebeurd, dan zou de NOS dat aannemelijk hebben mogen maken voordat ze die zomaar afdrukte. Ze had op zijn minst kunnen zeggen: de politie zegt het, maar wij hebben dat niet vastgesteld. Maar zoiets doet de NOS niet, die geeft dus alleen de politieversie.
Het is dus een verdachtmaking, met potentieel kwalijke gevolgen. Want er zijn dus mensen opgepakt, en de NOS noemt twee redenen. De tweede is ‘het niet kunnen tonen van een ID’. Maar de eerste is: ‘openlijke geweldpleging’. Daar past die zogenaamde stenengooierij in. Door die stenen zo te noemen, helpt de NOS het openbaar ministerie als dat OM echt strafvervolging zou doorzetten tegen de gearresteerde mensen.
Dit politiegeweld had een politiek doel, het was geen reactie op strafbare feiten. In optocht leuzen roepen in de binnenstad van Leiden is immers geen strafbaar feit. En die busjes en die ME waren ongetwijfeld startklaar gemaakt voordat ze maar hadden kunnen weten wat zich wel en niet bij de Jumbo zou afspelen, reëel of in hun eigen rijke fantasie. Dit was, om in justitiestijl te blijven, politiegeweld met voorbedachten rade.
Ik vermoed dat het besluit tot die politieaanval vaststond zodra duidelijk was dat er een onofficiële demonstratie gaande was, geheel ongeacht wat de demonstranten precies deden. Misschien dat iemand dat eventjes via de Wet Openbaarheid van Bestuur (WOB) boven water kan halen? Hoe dan ook. Dit politiegeweld was intimidatie en waarschuwing: onofficieel demonstreren wordt niet getolereerd. Zeker niet als de demonstranten radiaal en anarchistisch zijn, en zich met hun leuzen tegen de complete gevestigde orde en de bijbehorende staat keren. We moeten vooral niet denken dat we ongehinderd onze optochten rond woonprotesten kunnen blijven houden zoals dat onder meer in Arnhem en Tilburg lukte.
Openlijk anarchisme, radicaal activisme opererend buiten de voorgeschreven lijntjes, en dan ook nog in support van kraakactie: dat is waarom we zijn aangevallen. Dit is politieke repressie, en verdient het scherpst mogelijke antwoord: meer radicale woonstrijd, meer anarchistische strijd.

ARTIKEL 9, NEDERLANDSE GRONDWET
”
1. Het recht tot vergadering en betoging wordt erkend, behoudens ieders verantwoordelijkheid volgens de wet.
2. De wet kan regels stellen ter bescherming van de gezondheid, in het belang van het verkeer en ter bestrijding of voorkoming van wanordelijkheden.”
Art. 9 Gw zegt dat de overheid niet mag ingrijpen bij vergaderingen en betogingen. Wel geeft het tweede lid van het artikel de overheid de ruimte om burgers in enkele gevallen beperkingen op te leggen:
ter bescherming van de gezondheid
in het belang van het verkeer
ter bescherming of voorkoming van wanordelijkheden
Wet openbare manifestaties Deze drie criteria zijn nader uitgewerkt in de Wet openbare manifestaties (Wom) die in 1988 in werking is getreden. De wet bevat bepalingen over ‘de uitoefening van het recht tot vrije belijdenis van godsdienst en levensovertuiging en betreffende de uitoefening van het recht tot vergadering en betoging’. De Wom is dus niet alleen een uitwerking van art. 9 Gw, maar ook van art. 6 Gw over de godsdienstvrijheid. In dit verband is er een opmerkelijk verschil tussen beide grondwetsartikelen. In het tweede lid van art. 6 Gw is sprake van beperkingen ‘buiten gebouwen en besloten plaatsen’, terwijl art. 9 Gw een dergelijk onderscheid niet maakt.
De Wet openbare manifestaties geeft de gemeenteraad de mogelijkheid om bij een betoging op de openbare weg te eisen dat dit van tevoren wordt gemeld. Een niet gemelde betoging valt weliswaar onder de grondwettelijke vrijheid van betoging, maar een burgemeester kan met de Wom in de hand zo’n betoging beëindigen en de deelnemers opdracht geven uiteen te gaan. Veel gemeenten hebben rond demonstraties en betogingen een zinsnede in deze geest in hun verordeningen opgenomen: Voor het houden van een betoging of demonstratie heeft u geen voorafgaande vergunning van de gemeente nodig. Om de openbare orde tijdens een betoging of demonstratie te kunnen handhaven, is het wel noodzakelijk dat u de gemeente tijdig van uw plannen op de hoogte stelt.
Vrees voor vijandig publiek Van een overheid mag je verwachten dat ze zich niet inhoudelijk bemoeit met demonstraties. Zo kan het voorkomen dat betogende extreme groeperingen beschermd moeten worden tegen ‘brave burgers’ die zich opwinden over de demonstratie. De gedachten en uitingen van de demonstranten roepen bij het publiek wanordelijkheden en intolerant gedrag op. Vaak wordt voor deze problematiek de term ‘hostile audience’ gebruikt, ofwel ‘vijandig publiek’. Soms gaat het om mensen die proberen een demonstratie verbaal en fysiek te verstoren, soms organiseren de tegenstanders een tegendemonstratie op hetzelfde tijdstip en het liefst op dezelfde plek. In de loop van de tijd heeft het Europese Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens min of meer een aantal criteria vastgesteld rond ‘hostile audience’.
De overheid moet niet te snel uit angst voor wanordelijkheden een demonstratie verbieden. Er is altijd een zeker risico dat een demonstratie wordt verstoord. Is de angst van de overheid gegrond, zijn er duidelijke aanwijzingen dat het uit de hand gaat lopen dan is een verbod op zijn plaats.
De overheid mag geen tegendemonstratie weigeren omdat die demonstranten op dezelfde plaats op dezelfde tijd willen demonstreren.
Mensen moeten een demonstratie kunnen houden zonder bang te hoeven zijn dat ze aangevallen worden door tegendemonstranten. Autoriteiten hebben de verplichting om niet alleen demonstraties, maar óók tegendemonstraties te faciliteren en te beschermen.
De overheid hoeft geen garantie te geven op het recht van demonstratie en tegendemonstratie. Het is een inspanningsverplichting en geen resultaatsverplichting.
Wat mag en niet mag tijdens demonstraties In augustus 2020 heeft het College voor de Rechten van de Mens naar aanleiding van de acties van boeren tegen de stikstofmaatregelen, de Black Lives Matter-demonstraties en de protesten tegen de corona-maatregelen op rij gezet wat wel en wat niet mag tijdens een demonstratie.
De overheid moet de uitoefening van het recht op demonstratievrijheid faciliteren. Het is niet toegestaan een demonstratie zomaar af te lasten of te verplaatsen naar een onaantrekkelijk tijdstip of naar een plek waar niemand je ziet.
Het faciliteren van een demonstratie betekent ook dat de overheid de deelnemers beschermt. Bij tegendemonstraties en vijandige reacties vanuit het publiek moet de overheid zich inspannen om de demonstratie toch door te laten gaan.
De bescherming die het recht op demonstratievrijheid biedt, komt alleen toe aan vreedzame betogingen. De overheid mag betogingen beëindigen als de deelnemers gebruikmaken van geweld tegen personen of objecten. Demonstraties mogen ook geen haatgevoelens propageren die aanzetten tot discriminatie, vijandigheid of geweld.
Het recht op demonstratievrijheid is niet absoluut. Onder strikte voorwaarden mag de overheid een demonstratie beperken of zelfs verbieden. Art. 9 Gw zegt dat dat de overheid het recht op demonstratievrijheid mag beperken als dit nodig is om de gezondheid te beschermen, in het belang van het verkeer of om wanordelijkheden te bestrijden of voorkomen. Besluit een overheid een demonstratie te verbieden of te beperken, dan moet zij in dit besluit duidelijk maken waarom dit gerechtvaardigd en noodzakelijk is.
Bij het beperken of verbieden van een demonstratie moet de overheid een belangenafweging maken. De overheid moet kiezen voor de minst ingrijpende maatregel die zij tot haar beschikking heeft (subsidiariteit). Daarnaast moet de overheid afwegen of de maatregel daadwerkelijk nodig is om het doel – bijvoorbeeld het voorkomen van verkeershinder – te bereiken (proportionaliteit).
GESCHIEDENIS
Staatsregeling 1798 Het recht op vereniging dook samen met het recht op vergadering voor het eerst op in de Staatsregeling 1798. Artikel 18 zag er als volgt uit:
Grondwet 1848 Vervolgens verdween het recht op vergadering een tijdje achter de constitutionele horizon om in 1848 terug te keren als artikel 10 van de grondwet: ‘Het regt der ingezetenen tot vereeniging en vergadering wordt erkend. De wet regelt en beperkt de uitoefening van dat regt in het belang der openbare orde.’ De beperking ‘in het belang der openbare orde’ werd in 1855 geregeld in de Wet vereeniging en vergadering. Thorbecke toonde zich overigens geen voorstander van een dergelijke constructie: Wat baat de erkenning van een recht in de Grondwet, welks uitoefening afhangt van de wet? Beter dan, eenvoudig te zeggen: het regt van vereeniging wordt door de wet geregeld. Ook eene Grondwet moet oprecht zijn, en niet den schijn aannemen iets te geven wat zij inderdaad onthoudt.
Vereniging en vergadering in één artikel Vanaf 1848 tot de Grondwetswijziging van 1983 stonden het recht van vereniging en het recht van vergadering samen in één artikel. Men ging uit van de niet onlogische gedachte dat als je als vereniging iets wilt bereiken, het onontkoombaar is dat je ook met elkaar vergadert. De Grondwet van 1983 bracht daar verandering in door het verenigingsrecht in art. 8 en het vergaderingsrecht in art. 9 te regelen. De twee rechten werden apart opgenomen, zodat ze op verschillende wijze beperkt kunnen worden. Ook in veel internationale verdragen is voor zo’n verdeling gekozen.
Artikel 8 kent alleen een beperking bij wet. In vergelijking met de Grondwet van 1848 is het recht niet alleen aan de ingezetenen voorbehouden, maar geldt het voor iedereen. De verplichting richting de overheid is vervangen door de soepele formulering ‘kan worden beperkt’.
Artikel 9 geeft aan dat het recht tot vergadering ook op een andere manier kan worden beperkt door het voorbehoud te maken ‘behoudens ieders verantwoordelijkheid volgens de wet’. Vergeleken met oudere Grondwetsartikelen is het recht op vergadering uitgebreid met het recht te mogen betogen.

Pegida mag zaterdag niet demonstreren in Eindhoven. Burgemeester John Jorritsma heeft de betoging verboden. Dat maakte de gemeente Eindhoven vrijdagmiddag bekend.
De politie heeft sterke aanwijzingen dat er een tegendemonstratie wordt gepland waarbij geweld niet wordt geschuwd, aldus Jorritsma. Er zijn te weinig agenten in Oost-Brabant om ernstige wanordelijkheden het hoofd te bieden.De politie kan de veiligheid in Eindhoven op zo’n korte termijn na de vergunningsaanvraag niet garanderen. Ook niet bij een massale inzet, aldus Jorritsma. Daarvoor zou de politie een maand voorbereidingstijd nodig hebben.Op 26 mei leidde een demonstratie van zo’n twintig aanhangers van anti-islamorganisatie Pegida ‘tegen de islamisering’ tot rellen vlakbij de Al-Fourqaan moskee in Eindhoven. Daarbij kwam het tot een confrontatie met zo’n driehonderd tegendemonstranten. Jorritsma vreest een herhaling of erger, en ziet dan ook geen mogelijkheden om de demonstratie toe te staan.Nationale ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen zei eerder deze week het geen goed argument te vinden dat een demonstratie wordt verboden omdat die uit de hand kan lopen. De burgemeester schaadt daarmee het grondrecht op demonstratie, aldus Van Zutphen.Inmiddels heeft Pegida drie nieuwe data (11, 12 en 13 juni) voor demonstraties aangevraagd. “De mogelijkheden daarvoor worden op dit moment met hen besproken,” aldus een woordvoerder van de gemeente.Pegida reageert verontwaardigd. ‘En nu, Openbaar Ministerie? Betekent dit dat de Nederlandse rechtstaat opnieuw na 1940 capituleert, nu voor de fascistische islam,’ aldus Pegida op Facebook. On 25 January 2022, the Border Guards handed over to the contractors the construction site for the construction of the 186-kilometre wall on the border between Poland and Belarus. The contractor of the wall in the Białowieża Forest section is Budimex. The company makes every effort to ensure that works are carried out professionally and with respect for residents and the environment. Budimex will carry out works on the 100-kilometre section, and the border zone along the Białowieża Forest accounts for less than 40% of its length.
We understand the emotions that surround the issue of the construction of the wall on the border between Poland and Belarus, in particular, in the Białowieża Forest section; therefore, our representatives consulted the local governments on 26 January 2022. The meeting was attended by military representatives, heads of five gminas located within the development project area, forest district representatives and the Staroste of the Hajnowski Poviat.
During the meeting with the representatives of local governments, we confirmed that we have extensive experience in implementing projects in diverse environments. We carry out construction work, for example, in protected areas, including Natura 2000 areas in many places in Poland. The warehouses used to store our construction materials are and will be neutral for the environment. Our compliance with strict environmental standards is confirmed by numerous certificates – our construction sites have been issued with more than 100 BREEAM or LEED sustainable building certificates.
Although the contract does not require us to do so as a contractor, there will be external environmental supervision of the entire project. We understand that the Białowieża Forest is extremely valuable, and we want to work with respect for its ecosystem. The team assigned to the project has the highest level of competence to perform this task.
The works on the wall, transport and storage of raw materials will be carried out in accordance with the best construction and environmental standards. Our plan includes:
securing the soil with double and triple isolation to prevent leakage,
the use of spill kits,
covering and securing construction equipment repair points,
securing fuel tanks,
sorting and securing waste points,
preparation of separate points for hazardous waste,
fencing and monitoring of the area.
Our works will be carried out during the day, and the planned truck traffic at the construction location is several vehicles per hour. Upon completion, all roads will be restored to their original condition or will be improved.
Works on the entire project will take just six months. We are also on the list of strategic companies from a defence perspective. Therefore, we have a duty to act for the benefit of the country in the event of special situations from a security point of view. We responded in the same way to the calls for the construction of temporary hospitals or the completion of road and rail works after other general contractors had abandoned their contracts.
Our aim is to perform the contract through transparent subcontractor selection rules while respecting the interests of local communities and the environment. We make every effort to minimise the inconveniences for the residents and take into account the needs of the natural forest environment.”

Poland has accused Belarus’s president, Alexander Lukashenko, of deliberately provoking a new refugee crisis in Europe by organising the movement of people from the Middle East to Minsk and promising them a safe passage to the EU in revenge for the sanctions Brussels has imposed on his authoritarian regime.
Thousands of asylum seekers, mainly from Syria, Iraqi Kurdistan and Afghanistan, were caught attempting to cross the frontier and were violently pushed back to Belarus by Poland’s border guards, and hundreds of families were trapped in the forest between the two countries in the midst of a frigid winter.
At least 19 people have died since the beginning of the border standoff between Poland and Belarus. Most of them died of exposure to freezing temperatures.
The humanitarian emergency reached its peak in November when Belarusian authorities escorted thousands of asylum seekers to the Polish border. Dozens of refugees told the Guardian how Belarusian troops gathered groups of up to 50 people and cut the barbed wire with shears to allow them to cross.
“The construction of the barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border has started,” said a statement from the Polish border guard on Twitter. “It is the largest construction investment in the history of the border guard.”
The cost is approximately 10 times the whole budget of Poland’s migration department this year.
The news has raised human rights concerns among aid workers and charities worried that refugees fleeing conflicts and starvation will not be able to apply for asylum, and there are also environmental concerns. “This money could be used to build and launch [an] effective and humane migration, reception and asylum policy,” said a spokesperson for Ocalenie Foundation, which supports refugeesliving in Poland. “No wall in the history of the world stopped migration. Also, it would be a disaster for the nature in Białowieża area.”
The Białowieża forest world heritage site, on the border between Poland and Belarus, is an immense range of primary forest including conifers and broadleaved trees. It is home to the largest population of European bison.
Anna Alboth, of Minority Rights Group and a member of Grupa Granica, a Polish network of NGOs monitoring the situation on the border, said: “Walls are dividing, not protecting. The decision about building such a wall on the Polish-Belarusian border is not only lawless but also brings a risk of irreversible harm to the environment, in one of the most rich natural places of Poland and the whole of Europe.
“Instead of spending money on walls and private companies, it should be spending on developing a migration policy that prioritises human rights and safety of the people on the move, local people, animals and nature.”
A border guard spokesperson, Anna Michalska, told Poland’s PAP news agency that the “intention is for the damage to be as small as possible”. She said: “Tree felling will be limited to the minimum required. The wall itself will be built along the border road.” Contractors would only make use of existing roads, she said.
Last year Warsaw’s rightwing government quadrupled the presence of border guards and military personnel in the area, creating a two-mile deep militarised zone, and built a razor-wire fence, in a show of force unknown in the country since the end of the cold war. Dozens of checkpoints were placed along the perimeter of the so-called red zone, which is inaccessible to aid workers and journalists.
Last week Poland’s supreme court condemned the government for preventing reporters from accessing the area. Judges in Warsaw said the ban was incompatible with Polish law and that “there is no justification for admitting that this particular professional group represents a threat to steps taken”.

When we came upon them, they were afraid to get up off the ground and begged us not to call the police, whispering: “They’ll kill us.”
The infant was still, though not asleep. They looked like waxen figures, their faces blank, though one woman’s face was covered in bruises.
This is one group among the thousands of migrants trapped in a perilous purgatorial terrain between Belarus and Poland, as gateway to the European Union, where they seek refuge and asylum. That gate has slammed shut, claiming eight known migrant lives so far. Poland’s rightwing government has secured parliamentary authority to build a Donald Trump-style wall the length of its frontier with Belarus, and meanwhile patrols the territory with a force of some 17,000 border police reinforced by military personnel.
The Polish government argues that it is a deliberate policy by Belarus to undermine the EU’s south eastern border by encouraging refugees to pour in. The government has also established a two-mile militarised zone adjacent to the frontier, from which medical services, volunteer aid workers and reporters are banned. Crystal van Leeuwen, a medical emergency manager with Médecins Sans Frontières, told the Guardian last week that NGOs must urgently gain access to the secure zone for migrants’ claims and international protection to be respected.
The migrants are part not only of the exodus in flight from war and other tribulation where they began their journeys – across the Middle East and Africa – but also pawns in a game between Belarus and Poland. Many are lured by Belarusian travel bureaux, controlled by the authoritarian government of Alexander Lukashenko, which, as middlemen, organise trips from the Middle East to Minsk, promising passage to the EU.
The Iraqi Kurdish group is from Duhok, near the Turkish border. It is the scene of intense recent intra-Kurdish fighting, and Turkish strikes against the Kurdish PKK organisation. The mother of the children, 28-year-old Amila Abedelkader, said that the group was lured to Belarus by a travel agency that would arrange travel by plane from Istanbul to Minsk, and access to the Polish border.
Migrants are charged €15,000-€20,000 when they reach Belarus. Airport photos show their arrival wearing shorts and T-shirts, clearly unaware of the temperatures awaiting them. They are then installed in state hotels managed by the regime, from which officially assigned buses and even taxis transfer them to the Polish or Lithuanian border.
Belarusian border guards then shove them past the fence. “Some migrants we saw had their faces sliced with barbed wire,” says volunteer aid worker Katarzyna Wappa. “We have amateur films showing how the Belarusians drive the migrants forward. The border guards stand there with snarling attack dogs in full battle gear.”
Abdelkader says her group had made their first crossing into Poland in early October, but were forced back by guards. Trapped between borders, they were given nothing to drink or eat. “The Polish guards caught us and pushed us back. They said: ‘Go back to Belarus.’ And the Belarusian soldier said: ‘No, no go back to Poland.’ When the water was all finished, my brother asked Polish soldiers for some water to drink. Every day we asked about water. They say: ‘No, no.’” The guards refused to supply milk for the baby. The migrants drank rainwater or from puddles.
This was their third attempt. Whether they have since been successful is unclear.
But every morning we receive news on WhatsApp from people held in the border guards’ cells. Bulletins such as: “Yesterday a family and their sick son staying with us were taken by the police back to the border.” And: “We are so frightened of going to the border because my baby is too small. Please help us.”
Back home in the nearest town of Hajnówka, Wappa says: “We are creating a network, trying to do what we can, but it’s too much to bear. People are dying in the forest and the Polish state offers no help apart from bringing in more troops, rounding them up, and deporting them back to no man’s land. And if we reach those people, what can we give them? A flask of tea, some warm clothes, then leave them in the darkness and cold?”
In the forest last week, volunteers found Mustafa, a 46-year-old man from Morocco, taken in by a volunteer named Mila. Speaking Spanish, Mustafa told us: “As I made my way through the forest, I saw a man lying on the ground. I don’t know if he was alive or dead. I walked two nights until I could go no further. I was walking at night, trying to sleep during the day. I was in a vacuum.
“Belarusian soldiers beat people,” he continued. “They beat me in Belarus. There are gangs that stand behind the army and attack us. They beat you, take your money, and split it 50-50, part for the gangs, part for soldiers. This border is like a river of death. What are you to do? Where to go, I do not know.” Mustafa’s fate remains in the balance.
Once on the Polish side, migrants are tracked down by border guards, police, army, and territorial defence forces; in the Hajnówka region, practically every second car on the road belongs to law enforcement officers. Others have darkened windows – either protecting or smuggling the migrants.
“We’re in a parcelled-off, isolated world,” adds Kamil Syller, initiator of the Green Light project, which aims to put green lights in windows to signify homes where refugees can find help, discreetly, and not be handed over to the police.
At the Mantiuk Hospital in Hajnówka, a boy from Somalia tells how he watched his two brothers freeze to death. “It’s impossible to say where it happened,” he says.
“Apparently he’s losing contact with reality,” say the doctors. “He often asks: ‘But where am I?’” The refugees who reach the hospital receive professional medical care, yet the hospital is patrolled by border guards, and as soon as someone’s health is restored, guards take them back to the border and leave them in the forest.
Medics on the Border, a group of doctors with an ambulance, operates in the “open” areas, but are not allowed in the off-limits zone. Asked how they can be of help, they say: “We need passes to the zone,” says Jakub Sieczko, a paramedic. “But this is impossible.”Advertisement
“We have no access to the off-limits zone,” says a Polish Red Cross workerfrom the border area. “We can’t hand over aid packages ourselves.”
Syller says that the refugees are freezing, succumbing to hypothermia and shaking from fear and cold. “The children are having reactions similar to epileptic attacks. The suffering and terror here can only remind you of wartime,” he explains.
Wappa feels that she is “witnessing scenes like out of a war, but at least in a war things are clear. “This is worse, because here half the society denies what’s going on. They think it’s all a big sham, that there are politics behind it. People say of the refugees: ‘Why did they even leave home and why take their children?’”
This land is steeped in dark history of flight and deportation. And there are few reminders so cogent as in the village of Narewka, where a row of houses from before the second world war is adorned with enlarged photographs of the Jewish residents who lived here until the Holocaust.
The pictures show people posing in their finest clothes: an elderly couple, an Orthodox family, a girl in a polka-dot dress with bows in her hair, a sophisticated lady wearing a cap.
Now, past those houses in memoriam for Jews deported from here, military and police vehicles pass, carrying migrants for deportation.

Back home in the nearest town of Hajnówka, Wappa says: “We are creating a network, trying to do what we can, but it’s too much to bear. People are dying in the forest and the Polish state offers no help apart from bringing in more troops, rounding them up, and deporting them back to no man’s land. And if we reach those people, what can we give them? A flask of tea, some warm clothes, then leave them in the darkness and cold?”
In the forest last week, volunteers found Mustafa, a 46-year-old man from Morocco, taken in by a volunteer named Mila. Speaking Spanish, Mustafa told us: “As I made my way through the forest, I saw a man lying on the ground. I don’t know if he was alive or dead. I walked two nights until I could go no further. I was walking at night, trying to sleep during the day. I was in a vacuum.
“Belarusian soldiers beat people,” he continued. “They beat me in Belarus. There are gangs that stand behind the army and attack us. They beat you, take your money, and split it 50-50, part for the gangs, part for soldiers. This border is like a river of death. What are you to do? Where to go, I do not know.” Mustafa’s fate remains in the balance.
Once on the Polish side, migrants are tracked down by border guards, police, army, and territorial defence forces; in the Hajnówka region, practically every second car on the road belongs to law enforcement officers. Others have darkened windows – either protecting or smuggling the migrants.
“We’re in a parcelled-off, isolated world,” adds Kamil Syller, initiator of the Green Light project, which aims to put green lights in windows to signify homes where refugees can find help, discreetly, and not be handed over to the police.
At the Mantiuk Hospital in Hajnówka, a boy from Somalia tells how he watched his two brothers freeze to death. “It’s impossible to say where it happened,” he says.
“Apparently he’s losing contact with reality,” say the doctors. “He often asks: ‘But where am I?’” The refugees who reach the hospital receive professional medical care, yet the hospital is patrolled by border guards, and as soon as someone’s health is restored, guards take them back to the border and leave them in the forest.
Medics on the Border, a group of doctors with an ambulance, operates in the “open” areas, but are not allowed in the off-limits zone. Asked how they can be of help, they say: “We need passes to the zone,” says Jakub Sieczko, a paramedic. “But this is impossible.”Advertisement
“We have no access to the off-limits zone,” says a Polish Red Cross workerfrom the border area. “We can’t hand over aid packages ourselves.”
Syller says that the refugees are freezing, succumbing to hypothermia and shaking from fear and cold. “The children are having reactions similar to epileptic attacks. The suffering and terror here can only remind you of wartime,” he explains.
Wappa feels that she is “witnessing scenes like out of a war, but at least in a war things are clear. “This is worse, because here half the society denies what’s going on. They think it’s all a big sham, that there are politics behind it. People say of the refugees: ‘Why did they even leave home and why take their children?’”
This land is steeped in dark history of flight and deportation. And there are few reminders so cogent as in the village of Narewka, where a row of houses from before the second world war is adorned with enlarged photographs of the Jewish residents who lived here until the Holocaust.
The pictures show people posing in their finest clothes: an elderly couple, an Orthodox family, a girl in a polka-dot dress with bows in her hair, a sophisticated lady wearing a cap.
Now, past those houses in memoriam for Jews deported from here, military and police vehicles pass, carrying migrants for deportation.

Without waiting for the outcoming of the investigation of the Prosecutor’s Office, let alone a possible trial against the The Voice of Holland Four [or possibly more people]Because what we know until now? There are a number of allegations, uttered by real or alleged victims in the program ”BOOS” [many silly newsmedia already speak of ”real victims”], but there is no hard evidence until now, which -by the way- should be judged by the judge alone!
That’s why I tell to the public not to forget that we are living in countries with judges, with Courts and above all the principle:”Innocent until proven guilty”, which is established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Treaties, European,Dutch and International Law!
And let’s also face this uneasy truth:False accusations occur, especially when it concernsthe High and Mighty.
Therefore it is is of the greatest importance, that the allegation-casesare in the hands of the Prosecutor’s Office now, where a just, judicial decision can be made.

RTL temporarily canceled the television show the Voice of Holland due to allegations of sexually transgressive behavior and abuse of power by personnel connected to the show. Shortly after the announcement Saturday morning, it was revealed that composer and keyboardist Jeroen Rietbergen would leave the program with immediate effect. The Public Prosecution Service also confirmed that a criminal complaint connected to a person on the show was filed this week.
The editorial team of the BNNVARA program BOOS informed RTL on Wednesday of the incidents RTL said that The Voice of Holland will not air while the allegations are being investigated. “The allegations are very serious and shocking and were not known to RTL,” the broadcaster stated in a press release.-ADVERTENTIE-
“This Saturday, the editors received a confession and apology from the band leader of The Voice, Jeroen Rietbergen. Dutch singer Marco Borsato was also the subject of allegations about sexually transgressive behavior late last year. Borsato was also a coach on The Voice of Holland from 2011-2015. Rietbergen worked with Borsato for several years over the past two decades. Rietbergen was also previously in a relationship with Linda de Mol, the sister of The Voice creator John de Mol
The television show which uncovered the claims, BOOS, said that the episode detailing their investigation will air next week. “We put a huge amount of time and effort into the program. Our show about The Voice of Holland will be broadcast coming Thursday,” said BOOS program director Tim Hofman on Twitter.
Hofman began his investigation into power and sexual abuse claims in talent scouting shows in August. During his research, Hofman received information from people who said they experienced sexually transgressive behavior while on The Voice of Holland.
Television producer ITV reacted to the allegations stating, “Our highest priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for everyone who participates and works on our shows. ITV Studios has a zero-tolerance policy towards the kind of behavior that is said to have taken place. We have immediately ordered an outside investigation.”

DUTCH CREATOR OF THE VOICE ACCUSED OF VICTIM-BLAMING
The creator of reality TV shows including The Voice and Big Brother has been accused of victim-blaming by his company’s female employees after accusations of widespread sexual abuse of contestants on the original Dutch version of The Voice.
In a full-page advert in the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, a group of employees at the production company Talpa Media castigated its founder, John De Mol, for suggesting that women as well as men had lessons to learn from a scandal that has gripped the country this week and prompted the broadcaster RTL to take Friday’s episode of The Voice of Holland off air.
Following a deluge of allegations of abuse made against men on the show, De Mol, 66, said in an interview: “Do not wait. Do not be afraid. You have to open your mouth. Only then can we help you … Women apparently have a kind of shame, I don’t know what it is, but I would like to delve into it.”
In response, an advert was published in Friday’s newspaper that said: “Dear John, it’s not the women. Greetings, the women of your company.”
In an accompanying statement the group of employees wrote of their “amazement and shame” at De Mol’s comments. It “says a lot about a culture change that is needed within the company, but also in the media world and society,” the statement continued. “And certainly at more large companies where these kinds of thinking errors are still made by men in power.
“Women’s behaviour is not the problem. And not the solution either. This statement is of course also for all other victims of sexually transgressive behaviour in the workplace (not just at Talpa), to encourage them.”
On Friday night, De Mol said he had been “moved” by the advert and had spoken to the women behind it to “understand this anger and disappointment”. He added: “I now understand that, contrary to my good intentions, I have failed to take into account the fact that I, completely unintentionally, gave the impression that I was putting the blame on women. It has become clear to me now that women will not come forward if the culture in a company is not perceived as being sufficiently safe. I blame myself for the fact that this is apparently the case in my company, and I am 100% committed to changing this.”
The Voice of Holland was suspended before Thursday’s broadcast of a documentary on the YouTube channel Boos, which translates as “angry”, and is run by the public broadcasting company BNNVARA. In the documentary, dozens of anonymous women alleged that high-profile men on The Voice had sexually harassed, abused and assaulted them.
A spokesperson for ITV Studios said the company was “shocked and dismayed” by the allegations but declined to comment on De Mol’s interview. She said: “Our utmost priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for everyone who takes part in or works on our shows and there is zero tolerance at ITV Studios for the type of behaviour highlighted in the show.
“After ITV Studios received notice from Boos of this behaviour last week we moved quickly to launch an external investigation to fully understand what happened.”
Netherlands authorities, including the justice minister, subsequently urged anyone who had been a victim of sexual abuses on the programme to file a complaint with the police so that they and the Public Prosecution Service could investigate
The rapper Ali Bouali, 40, a coach on the show who goes by the name Ali B, was accused by one former contestant of raping her when she appeared on the programme as an 18-year-old hopeful.
In a statement, he responded: “There are now two anonymous reports that are presented with a lot of fury as news. That is unjustified. I cannot publicly defend myself against this. Nevertheless, it is clear to me that the Public Prosecution Service will in both cases have to decide to dismiss [the allegations]. I am not guilty of what I am accused of in the claims.”
Before the broadcast of the allegations, Jeroen Rietbergen, 50, the show’s bandleader, stood down after admitting to having had “sexual contact” with women on the show and sending sexually oriented messages on an app. Rietbergen, until recently the partner of De Mol’s sister, the TV presenter Linda de Mol, said he was not aware of wrongdoing at the time of the alleged incidents.
Six other women have made complaints about the singer Marco Borsato, three of them contestants on The Voice and three on The Voice Kids. Borasto denies any wrongdoing.
De Mol, who initially made his fortune through development of the reality television series Big Brother, spoke of his disappointment that the HR procedures in his company had not protected the contestants.
ITV bought Talpa Media seven years ago for £355m, with further payments dependent on future performance, up to a total potential cost of £920,000.
The company has created 75 shows in more than 180 countries. The Voice format, in which singers are selected via public auditions and then coached by professionals before a competition for a recording contract, has been aired in 50 countries.
Anouk Teeuwe, a female singer who represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision song contest in 2013, said she had quit as a coach on the programme.
“The news is so saddening and a major disappointment,” she said. “I know enough. I’ve decided I don’t want to return to The Voice. It’s a corrupt mess. I don’t want to work at a place where men have, for years, abused their positions and where others have chosen to keep the misconduct silent and look the other way.
“You just can’t do that. You’ve got structural issues when you do that. I do not wish to be part of such behaviour, that’s just not me. So therefore, I will not return to The Voice of Holland.”

THE VOICE: DUTCH TV SUSPENDS SHOW OVER SEXUAL MISCONDUCT CLAIMS
Jeroen Rietbergen, the series’ band leader, resigned on Saturday, admitting to “relationships of a sexual nature” with women involved in the programme.
The UK version was previously broadcast on the BBC for five series, before it moved to ITV.
The show sees the singing coaches do initial “blind auditions” with singing hopefuls, who have to perform while the judges’ backs are turned, so they are assessed only on their vocal merits.

“Our utmost priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for everyone who takes part in or works on our shows and there is zero tolerance at ITV Studios for the type of behaviour alleged to have taken place,” they said.
“We have immediately commissioned an external investigation into the allegations.”
RTL told the BBC the “very serious and shocking” allegations “were not known to RTL”.
They said they were told about the “allegations of sexually transgressive behaviour and abuse of power in relation to The Voice of Holland” on 12 January by by news programme Boos, broadcast on Dutch public broadcaster BNN/VARA, which had been conducting an investigation.
Alleged misconduct
RTL added that a “mutual agreement” was reached with ITV about it conducting a “diligent, independent investigation” into the allegations.
“We take this very seriously. Everyone, including both participants and employees, must be able to work in complete safety. There is no room for interpretation here. The priority now is to get the facts straight,” they said.
The BBC has asked RTL for comment from Rietbergen.
The Hollywood Reporter said it was “not clear whether the alleged misconduct at The Voice of Holland took place before or after the ITV takeover”.
RTL suggested there is “talk of abuse of power and sexually transgressive behaviour of three employees”, including “a complaint against jury member Ali B” but that his management said: “Ali has never abused his position and has never acted” in a sexually transgressive way.”
Dutch rapper Ali B posted on Instagram he is “100% convinced” of his own innocence and his management said they currently had nothing to add to his words on social media.
Pre-recorded shows held back
Rietbergen said in a statement he had some years ago had “contact of a sexual nature” with women involved in the programme, and that he had exchanged sexually explicit messages” with them.
He added he did not feel he was abusing his position of powerbut has “now become very aware that my own perception is not relevant at all, but much more the perception of the women concerned. And that these women may have experienced this very differently”.
The identity of the third employee has not been made public.
The Hollywood Reporter said Rietbergen has been in a romantic relationship for more than a decade with Dutch TV star Linda de Mol, who is the sister of one of the show’s creators. but that she declined to comment.
Reitbergen said he has been very aware for “a number of years” that he made a mistake, and that he has received professional help for his behaviour, according to RTL.
ITV Studios told Hollywood Reporter they were contacted “this week” by Boos with the allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” associated with the show.
RTL said the show runs for 15 episodes and that 12 have been recorded, with two broadcast. The last three would have been broadcast live.
A YouTube documentary about sexual intimidation and abuse surrounding The Voice of Holland talent show has detailed a long list of claims about sexual abuse, inappropriate comments and behaviour and even one instance of rape. The long-awaited programme, broadcast on Thursday afternoon, involved statements from dozens of anonymous women who were contestants on the show. One former contestant accused rapper and show coach Ali B of raping her eight years ago, when she appeared on the show as an 18-year-old. The woman told her story in a disguised voice, saying she ‘froze’ during the attack and that it had taken her years to realise she was not to blame. Two women have so far made police complaints about B, who denies all the allegations. The programme included other anonymous women who spoke about B promising them fame and then trying to kiss and touch them at his home or in the dressing room – a pattern repeated by other men involved in the show. Off air RTL took the talent hunt off air last weekend when band leader Jeroen Rietbergen went public with a confession, before the allegations were broadcast. Rietbergen is alleged to have made continuous sexualised comments during rehearsals, sent women photos of his sexual organ and in one case, had physical contact. The complaints about Rietbergen cover a period of over ten years, from 2010 and involve at least 19 women. De Mol The show also made it clear that John de Mol, who devised the programme and owned broadcasting company Talpa until it was taken over by ITV in 2019, was aware of at least one case of unacceptable sexual behaviour by Rietbergen in April 2019. De Mol told the programme he had summoned Rietbergen and given him a serious talking too, but also gave him a second chance. De Mol said he was not aware that Rietbergen had also sexually intimidated other women. Rietbergen was at the time in a relationship with De Mol’s sister, television presenter Linda. The couple separated after the scandal broke and Linda de Mol said before the broadcast that her heart ‘wept for all the women who have suffered’. Six women made complaints about singer Marco Borsato, three from contestants on The Voice and three on The Voice Kids. A spokesman for Borsato, who was faced with allegations about his behaviour at the end of the last year, said he would not be commenting on the claims. Director A further 15 women made complaints about one of the show’s directors who was not named by the programme makers. He was accused of making inappropriate comments and touching the contestants and told the programme via his lawyer that he denied all the accusations. Since the storm broke, judge and coach Anouk has also quit the line-up, and the main sponsors have dumped the programme. RTL has also pulled The Voice Kids and The Voice Senior. The Voice format has been bought by broadcasters in over 50 countries world wide, since its inception in 2010.
A week and a half after the first revelations of sexually transgressive behavior at the talent show The Voice of Holland, the Center for Sexual Violence (CSG) is still receiving more calls and chats than usual. Most people report experiencing sexual violence a long time ago.
Wher the CSG usually conducts about 12 to 13 chat conversations a day, on the day that BNN/VARA program BOOS put the episode about The Voice online on Thursday, there were 341 chat conversations. On Friday, the center had 286 chat conversations. “The chats just keep coming,” said CSG head Iva Bicanic. “Where we normally have two emergency workers on the cats at night, we were still short of hands during the peak with 12 emergency workers.”-ADVERTENTIE-
The number of chats decreased over the weekend but remained above average. On Monday, CSG workers held a total of 131 conversations.
There are also more calls coming in than usual. On the day of the BOOS broadcast, the center received 92 calls – over four times as many as the same day a year ago. On Friday, there were 232 calls. Over the weekend, the number of calls dropped to about 70 a day. On Monday, the phone rang 101 times.
The reporting on the alleged abuse on The Voice of Holland has had an enormously triggering effect,” said Bicanic. “It triggered something for many victims of sexual violence. There was no escaping it; the whole of the Netherlands was talking about sexual violence, wherever you looked or listened. For many victims, this caused hidden memories to surface, and thus the suffering pressure increased.”
The reports came, for example, from people who were struggling with re-experiences, sleeping-, and concentration problems. Others called because they felt empowered to seek help after hearing stories in the media. People also called who realized that they themselves had been a victim after all the attention to the subject.
Last week, the CSG called in a “Letter to the Netherlands” to prevent victim-blaming. According to the center, 75 percent of victims of sexual violence face accusatory comments and inappropriate questions.
The organization Victim Support also reported that chat conversations tripled last week.
BOOS maker Tim Hofman also notices the first results of his episode on The Voice of Holland. “Something seems to be moving,” the presenter wrote on Instagram. “We see companies, universities, associations, and other institutes adjusting their policies to create a safer environment. A Cabinet (including Prime Minister) speaks out. Men talk to each other, women share with each other,” said Hofman. This is a “valuable” development, but “we are not there yet,” he added. “It feels like the first big breath of a new wind.”
The presenter also thanked all the people who told their stories about the abuses behind the scenes at The Voice in the broadcast. Dozens of women spoke out about sexually transgressive behavior on the RTL program. This included accusations against band leader Jeroen Rietbergen and coaches Marco Borsato and Ali B.

AMSTERDAM — The Dutch talent show “The Voice of Holland” has been taken off the air in the Netherlands amid a sexual misconduct scandal that has cast a shadow over the future of the TV ratings juggernaut in the country where it was first conceived by a media mogul.
The furor is one of the most serious #MeToo reckonings yet to hit the Dutch entertainment world and focuses on a show created in the Netherlands but broadcast in local versions around the globe.
It also draws in a family considered television royalty in the Netherlands — the original creator John de Mol and his sister Linda, a television star in her own right in the Netherlands and Germany who last weekend split from “The Voice of Holland’s” pianist and band leader after he admitted having sexual contacts with some contestants.
The Dutch scandal erupted after a local broadcaster’s YouTube show called “BOOS” — the Dutch word for angry — contacted “The Voice of Holland” to say it has spoken to victims of “sexually transgressive behavior” on the show and is planning to broadcast a program about their allegations on Thursday.
Prosecutors have received two complaints in recent days against one of the show’s panelists, Dutch rapper Ali Bouali. His lawyer, Bart Swier, said Wednesday that the artist known as Ali B denies any wrongdoing. Swier declined to comment further.
The complaints, which Swier said were filed Jan. 11 and on Tuesday, will trigger investigations to establish whether Ali B should face any criminal charges.
Even Prime Minister Mark Rutte has weighed in on the scandal swirling around one of the Netherlands’ most popular TV shows.
“I think everybody is very shocked and it’s good that it is investigated,” he told the Dutch daily De Telegraaf.
Dutch broadcaster RTL, which airs “The Voice of Holland,” reacted swiftly to the reports, saying over the weekend that it was suspending the show. It called the allegations “very serious and shocking” and said they weren’t known to RTL.
Dutch media reported Wednesday that RTL had suspended its ties with Ali B as a result of the complaints. The network did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The show’s pianist and band leader, Jeroen Rietbergen, quit over the weekend and issued a statement acknowledging his actions.
“During my years of involvement with “The Voice of Holland,” I had contact of a sexual nature with some women involved in the program and exchanged sexually tinted WhatsApp messages,” he said in a statement to the RTL Boulevard entertainment news show.
Rietbergen went on to say that after initially considering the sexual encounters “as reciprocal and equal,” he later came to understand that the women “may have experienced this very differently. This insight has made me realize that my behavior has been completely wrong.”
His statement also suggested the show’s producers had known about his actions and cautioned him in the past. Rietbergen’s lawyer didn’t immediately respond to a call and email seeking comment.
Rietbergen’s partner, Linda de Mol, said in a statement on her website that she split from Rietbergen after the scandal broke and was taking a break from her own television career.
RTL said it contacted the show’s producer ITV Studios, which agreed to “immediately initiate a diligent, independent investigation.” The Dutch broadcaster said that “Participants, employees, everyone must be able to work in complete safety. There is no room for interpretation in this. The priority now is to get the facts on the table.”
ITV Studios said: “Our highest priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for everyone who participates in — or works on — our shows and ITV Studios has a zero-tolerance policy towards the type of behavior it is said to have taken place.”
The company said its investigation aims to “build a complete picture of what happened” and encouraged victims or witnesses to speak to the investigation.
Dutch singer Anouk said she was quitting as one of the show’s panelists, who first get to know contestants by listening to them “blind” from a swiveling chair facing away from the stage before going on to mentor them.
“I don’t want to work in a place where for years a number of men have abused their position and deliberately chose to keep it quiet and look the other way,” she said in an Instagram video.
The Dutch public broadcast organization NPO also took action as a result of the scandal, sending a letter to public networks urging them to make sure they have sufficient checks for misconduct.
“We treat everyone equally and respectfully,” the organization said Tuesday in a letter to the broadcasters. “Attention is paid to unequal power relationships and dependency relationships, where there may be an increased risk of undesirable transgressive behavior.”

The US government must immediately end its ongoing deliveries of large quantities of arms to Israel, which are providing the tools to commit further serious violations of international law in Gaza, said Amnesty International, as it called for a total arms embargo on all parties to the conflict.
The call comes amid reports that the Pentagon has approved the immediate transfer of grenades and mortar rounds to the Israeli armed forces from a US arms stockpile pre-positioned in Israel, and follows a shipment of 4.3 tons of US-manufactured rocket motors, which arrived in the Israeli port of Haifa on 15 July.
These deliveries add to more than US$62 million worth of munitions, including guided missile parts and rocket launchers, artillery parts and small arms, already exported from the USA to Israel between January and May this year.
“The US government is adding fuel to the fire by continuing its supply of the type of arms being used by Israel’s armed forces to violate human rights. The US government must accept that by repeatedly shipping and paying for such arms on this scale they are exacerbating and further enabling grave abuses to be committed against civilians during the conflict in Gaza,” said Brian Wood, Head of Arms Control and Human Rights at Amnesty International.
Palestinian armed groups have continued to fire rockets indiscriminately into Israel, endangering civilians in flagrant violation of international law. Amnesty International has repeatedly called for an immediate end to such attacks, which amount to war crimes.
Last week the speaker of the Iranian parliament said Iran had provided arms manufacturing know-how to Hamas in Gaza. In November 2012 he said Iran had given both financial and military support to Hamas and the Commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said missile technology has been supplied. Hamas fighters have admitted to firing Iranian-type Fajr 5 missiles towards Tel Aviv, but mostly fire shorter-range M25 or “Qassam” rockets.
The USA is by far the largest exporter of military equipment to Israel. According to data made public by the US government, its arms transfers to Israel from January to May 2014 included nearly $27million for “rocket launchers”, $9.3 million worth in “parts of guided missiles” and nearly $762,000 for “bombs, grenades and munitions of war”.
The news on 30 July that the USA had allowed the resupply of munitions to Israel came the same day the US government condemned the shelling of a UN school in Gaza which killed at least 20 people, including children and UN humanitarian workers.
“It is deeply cynical for the White House to condemn the deaths and injuries of Palestinians, including children, and humanitarian workers, when it knows full well that the Israeli military responsible for such attacks are armed to the teeth with weapons and equipment bankrolled by US taxpayers,” said Brian Wood.
Amnesty International is calling on the UN to immediately impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel, Hamas and Palestinian armed groups with the aim of preventing violations of international humanitarian law and human rights by all sides.
In the absence of a UN arms embargo, the organization is calling on all states to unilaterally suspend all transfers of military equipment, assistance and munitions to all parties to the conflict. They should not resume until violations committed in previous conflicts are properly investigated with those responsible brought to justice.
“As the leading arms exporter to Israel, the USA must lead the way and demonstrate its proclaimed respect for human rights and international humanitarian law by urgently suspending arms transfers to Israel and pushing for a UN arms embargo on all parties to the conflict. By failing to do so it is displaying a callous disregard for lives being lost in the conflict on all sides,” said Brian Wood.
More than 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since Israel began its latest offensive in Gaza on 8 July. At least 56 Israeli soldiers have died in the conflict, as well as three civilians in Israel, including a Thai national.

Eerder op de dag had de secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, Ban Ki-moon, al zijn afschuw uitgesproken over de beschieting van de VN-school in Rafah waar zo’n 3.000 Palestijnse vluchtelingen verbleven. Zeker tien mensen werden gedood toen een raket insloeg bij de ingang van de school, aldus medische bronnen in Gaza.
Tientallen mensen raakten gewond. Veel Palestijnen hadden hun toevlucht gezocht tot de onderwijsinstelling die wordt gerund door de Verenigde Naties. Het Israëlische leger heeft nog niet gereageerd. Het is nog niet duidelijk wie verantwoordelijk is voor de raketinslag. Ongeveer 3.000 Palestijnen hadden hun toevlucht gezocht in de school.
De secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, Ban Ki-moon, noemt de aanval ‘een morele schande en een misdaad’. Volgens Ban is het Israëlische leger meerdere keren geïnformeerd over de locatie van de school.

De Europese Unie heeft het aanhoudende bloedvergieten in de Gazastrook zondag nog eens nadrukkelijk veroordeeld. Bij monde van de voorzitter van de Europese Raad, Herman Van Rompuy en de voorzitter van de Europese Commissie, José Manuel Barroso werd het ‘onmiddellijke einde’ van de militaire acties geeist. ‘Alleen een onderhandelde oplossing gebaseerd op twee staten die elkaar respecteren kan tot vrede leiden’, stelt Van Rompuy.
Het Israëlische leger heeft toegegeven te hebben gevuurd nabij de VN-school. ‘Het Israëlische leger viseerde drie terroristen op de motorfiets nabij de school in Rafah’, stelt het leger in een mededeling. ‘De Israëlische defensie onderzoekt de gevolgen van die inslag.’ De Israelische regering kondigde in de nacht van zondag op maandag een ‘humanitair bestand’ af dat maandag van 7 tot 14 uur zou gelden.
Het is de derde aanval op een VN-school in de Gaza-strook in tien dagen tijd. Op 24 juli werd een school in Beit Hanoun getroffen en afgelopen donderdag werd een school in Jabaliya geraakt. Bij die twee aanvallen kwamen meer dan dertig Palestijnen om het leven. De Verenigde Naties legden verantwoordelijkheid voor het drama in Jabaliya bij Israël.

In de Gazastrook schuilen circa 250.000 mensen in gebouwen van de VN voor het Israëlische geweld. Volgens Israël is er vanuit de buurt geschoten. Vertegenwoordigers van de VN vonden raketopslagplaatsen van Palestijnse strijders in drie schoolgebouwen.
De raketinslag op de school in Rafah volgt op de aankondiging door de Israëlische premier Benjamin Netanyahu zaterdagavond dat het Gaza-offensief voorlopig zal worden doorgezet. Het leger zal zijn operaties zolang voortzetten totdat het doel is bereikt: ‘de vrede naar Israël terugbrengen’, zei hij zaterdagavond in Tel Aviv.

‘We zullen alle tunnels vernietigen’, voegde hij eraan toe. ‘Het leger wordt zolang ingezet tot alle werk is volbracht.’ En dat bleek ook meteen. Bij meerdere luchtaanvallen zijn volgens Palestijnse bronnen zondagmorgen zeven mensen om het leven gekomen. Vijftien Palestijnen raakten gewond. Palestijnen die aan de kust wonen, vertelden dat de Israëlische luchtmacht zware bombardementen heeft uitgevoerd in verschillende Palestijnse gebieden.
Na de vernietiging van de tunnels van de ‘radicaal-islamitische’ Hamas zal Israël de situatie opnieuw evalueren en bijkomende stappen ondernemen die nodig zijn voor de veiligheid.

Three ICRC vehicles are leaving Shujaia. They have rescued 11 people from the rubble but the intense combat has forced them back. As they depart an angry crowd of Palestinians attacks the vehicles with stones and sticks. “You are useless,” the crowd shouts. “You must protect us.”
But we cannot. The anger is unpleasant and misplaced, but understandable. We do our utmost, risking the lives of our staff to rescue who we can, but we cannot end the conflict. As ever, humanitarian organisations are a sticking plaster, not the solution.
If your home in Gaza was being shelled, who would you call in desperation? On the night Israel’s ground offensive began intense fire struck north-east Gaza. The emergency services, including our partners at the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS), were overloaded. Many Gazans tried to telephone us. Our office switchboard couldn’t cope. In the dark violent hours of the night we could not send ambulances or restore the water supply or treat the injured dying of their wounds. Isolated and terrified, with nowhere to flee and no help in sight, the anger of Palestinian families grew.
Two nights later in Shujaia hundreds more families went through the same ordeal. Again ICRC staff and PRCS volunteers could do little. With no guarantees of safety it would have been folly to attempt a rescue. In the daylight a temporary ceasefire was agreed, at our request. It was quickly broken, but nevertheless several dozen injured were brought from their ruined homes to hospitals and hundreds took advantage of our presence on the spot to flee. It was little and late. No wonder the helpless families have accused us of callous disregard. When your one faint hope of help is snuffed out the intensity of disappointment is all the deeper.
Other accusations have been levelled.
We were charged with collaborating with the Israeli Defence Forces in the destruction of Wafa hospital. In truth, we sought to protect the hospital through our dialogue with both sides. When combat came perilously close we intervened to win time for a possible last-resort evacuation of gravely ill patients, many on life support.
We are upbraided for not taking sides and refusing to apportion blame. Given our strict political neutrality it is usual that we get criticised by all sides at different times. But the ICRC is not silent in the face of clear breaches of international law. We explicitly and loudly condemned the direct shelling of the Al Aqsa hospital on July 21st that killed at least four people. We clearly denounce the indiscriminate rocketing of Israel. We stated categorically that even in the midst of warfare, people must be able to receive medical care in safety.
We are horrified at the death toll. We have repeatedly called for both sides to protect and spare civilians. We have warned of the need to protect Gaza’s perilously fragile water supply – many residents of the densely populated area are now without water, at the height of the scorching hot Mediterranean summer. Today our priority is the civilians, in Beit Hanoun and many other places all over Gaza. We are calling on all sides, based on the humanitarian imperatives of the situation, to ensure that their combat operations be conducted in accordance with the fundamental principles of international laws protecting civilians. But will our pleas for restraint, and the constant efforts of nearly 140 staff and more than 400 PRCS teams to rescue civilians and restock hospitals, be enough to quell the anger of grieving families? We hope so but we understand that it might not.
We do ask one thing: understand the limits of our role and look to the politicians to end this deadly, miserable conflict.

STATEMENT BY THE SPOKESPERSON ONDEVELOPMENTS IN OCCUPIED EAST JERUSALEM
On Wednesday, 19 January, Israeli authorities demolished a family home in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem. The possibility of further evictions of Palestinian families from homes they have lived in for decades in the Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighbourhoods of East Jerusalem poses the risk of fuelling tensions on the ground and contributes to the worrying trend of increasing numbers of demolitions and evictions in the West Bank, including in East Jerusalem.
On Monday, 17 January the Jerusalem District Committee for Planning and Building decided to advance a plan for the construction of more than 1,450 settlement-housing units between Har Homa and Givat Hamatos for the “Lower Aqueduct Plan”, which includes lands in occupied East Jerusalem. The EU urges Israel not to proceed with this plan that would further undermine the possibility of Jerusalem serving as the future capital of both States and to halt all settlement activities.
Settlement expansion, demolitions and evictions are illegal under international law. They exacerbate tensions, threaten the viability of the two-state solution and diminish prospects for a lasting peace. The EU stands ready to give the parties full support in opening the path towards the relaunch of the peace process as soon as possible.

Supermarktketen Albert Heijn kwam afgelopen weekend negatief in het nieuws met een aanbieding van aardappelen uit Israël, terwijl Nederlandse aardappelen met miljoenen euro’s aan overheidssteun vanwege de coronacrisis worden doorgedraaid.
Op sociale media zijn de reacties van consumenten en boeren niet mals. ‘Waarom onze eigen piepers niet vol trots in het schap leggen?’ vragen velen in tweets aan de grootste supermarktketen.
Ook D66-Kamerlid Tjeerd de Groot mengt zich met een blog in de discussie. Daarin stelt hij dat consumenten, ‘anders dan retailers zelf beweren’, niet bepalen wat er in de schappen ligt. ‘Supermarkten weten als geen ander consumenten te verleiden tot precies die aankoop die de verkoper goed uitkomt.’
Schapprijs is leidend
Om daaraan toe te voegen: ‘Sinds wanneer vragen consumenten om aardappelen uit Israël? Inkopers van supermarkten letten slechts op drie zaken: de prijs, de prijs en de prijs.’ Dit alles heeft in belangrijke mate bijgedragen tot de moeilijke situatie waarin de Nederlandse land- en tuinbouw verkeert, betoogt De Groot.
De D66-politicus stelt dat boeren alleen het hoofd boven water kunnen houden door steeds intensiever te produceren, ten koste van henzelf en de natuur. Dat supermarkten dan voorrang geven aan buitenlandse producten, helpt er niet aan mee, duidt het Tweede Kamerlid.
Maar zo eenvoudig ligt het niet, laat woordvoerder Pauline van den Brandhof van Albert Heijn weten. ‘Bij Albert Heijn halen we onze producten graag zo dichtbij als mogelijk en zo ver weg als noodzakelijk.’ Het begrip ‘noodzakelijk’ is voor iedereen anders, stelt ze.
In het seizoen
‘Maar klanten verwachten wel dat alle producten jaarrond bij ons te koop zijn en niet alleen maar in het seizoen in Nederland.’ Van den Brandhof legt uit dat als de Nederlandse aardappelen op het gebied van kwaliteit, smaak en uiterlijk niet meer aan de kwaliteitseisen voldoen, het bedrijf overstapt op nieuweoogstaardappelen uit onder meer Israël.
‘Deze worden aan het einde van het jaar geplant om rond maart te worden geoogst. Dat wordt ook wel ‘springcrop’ genoemd.’ Ook zijn Nederlandse fritesaardappelen, de soort die de overheid steunt met 50 miljoen euro coronakrediet, niet geschikt voor de pan thuis. Dit wegens slecht kookgedrag of blauwverkleuring in het schap.
De doordraai van deze aardappelen of verwerking in veevoer is het gevolg van het stilvallen van de horeca. Daarnaast werken bijna alle aardappeltelers via contractafname, waarbij de prijs al gegarandeerd is.
Tegen de borst
Toch stuit de aanbieding van 1,5 kilo Israëlische AH Excellent Primeur aardappelen voor 2,47 euro ook boeren tegen de borst. Zo schrijft Ludolf Fledderman, werkzaam bij akkerbouwbedrijf Kerkhovenpolder uit het Noord-Groningse Woldendorp:
‘Onze overheerlijke Agria’s buiten het contract gaan maandag het veevoer in voor 1 cent per kilo’, in een reactie op de AH-aanbieding, onder de hashtag #ikbengek. Fledderman krijgt op Twitter veel bijval dat Albert Heijn hiermee Nederlandse boeren in de kou laat staan.
Het bericht is honderden keren geretweet en lokt kritische reacties uit, variërend van ‘gemiste kans’ tot ‘schande’ en ‘absurd dit’. Wat opvalt, is dat naast consumenten boeren van zich laten horen. Dit terwijl agrariërs uit de eerste hand weten welke soorten aardappelen er zijn en hoe de Nederlandse keten in elkaar zit.
Exportpositie Nederland
Andere twitteraars reageren genuanceerder en geven AH gelijk. ‘Nederland is de grootste exporteur van landbouwproducten, dus het kan niet anders dat zo’n reactie in het buitenland veel vaker voorkomt, doordat onze producten daar de lokale landbouwers ‘wegdrukken’, zegt Frank Visser. ‘Beetje ‘Pot verwijt de ketel’.’
Wim Paardenkooper sluit zich daarbij aan: ‘Veruit de meeste soorten bij Appie zijn Nederlands. Kort door de bocht dat deze aardappelen in plaats van NL aardappelen komen.’
Albert Heijn sluit zich bij dit laatste aan. AH-woordvoerder Van den Brandhof: ‘Rond augustus en september zijn de aardappelen die hier zijn geplant, klaar om te worden geoogst en wordt er overgestapt op aardappelen uit Nederland.’
Eerder controverse
Het importeren van aardappelen uit Israël door Albert Heijn, leidde ook ver voor de coronacrisis al tot controverse. De Palestina Werkgroep Enschede riep een jaar geleden in verschillende winkelcentra op tot een ‘aardappelboycot’ tegen Israël.
Anti-Israëlische activisten deelden flyers uit en stonden op straat met borden waarop stond ‘Prik geen Palestijn aan je vork’, doelend op de Israëlische aardappelen. De activisten vinden dat Israël een apartheidsstaat is, zoals het Zuid-Afrika van voor 1994 en willen daarom de producten bannen.
Albert Heijn zegt hierover: ‘Deze aardappelen uit Israël zijn niet afkomstig uit enig bezet gebied en voldoen aan het Albert Heijn-teeltprotocol. Ze zijn geteeld en geoogst in de Negev-woestijn en komen dus uitsluitend van Israëlisch grondgebied.’
29/12/2016Eind oktober is het NPK opnieuw in Amsterdam begonnen met een boycotcampagne gericht tegen Israelische producten in de filialen van Albert Heijn (AH). In de loop van vier acties hebben wij rond 700 nieuw vervaardigde flyers uitgedeeld. Wij zijn actief met een groep van 5 à 6 personen, die bij de ingang van het AH-filiaal flyeren. De reacties van het publiek zijn uiteenlopend van geïnteresseerd (‘Oh, dat ga ik lezen’) en goedkeurend (‘Helemaal mee eens’) tot onverschillig en soms afkeurend. Om de 14 dagen voeren wij op zaterdagmiddag gedurende anderhalf uur onze actie uit.
Wij zijn tevreden met dit eerste begin. Tegelijk beseffen wij dat er bij méér AH-filialen geflyerd moet worden. Want dan zullen wij in staat zijn een groter publiek te bereiken. En daarvoor zijn méér actievoerders nodig.
Op zaterdag 7 maart was een BDS-inspectieteam bij Albert Heijn in de Grote Houtstraat, Haarlem op zoek naar producten met herkomst “Israel”. Er werden 18 producten gevonden, waarvan de herkomst mogelijk besmet is met schending van mensenrechten. Een lijst van de gevonden producten is aan de bedrijfsleider aangeboden. Het passerend publiek voor de winkel werd met een scorebord geïnformeerd over de voortgang van de inspectie. De bedrijfsleider is gevraagd de producten uit de schappen te halen en niet meer te verkopen.
BDS staat voor Boycot, Desinvestering en Sancties. Wereldwijd wordt de BDS-campagne gehouden om via een boycot van Israelische producten druk op Israel uit te oefenen om na een halve eeuw bezetting en onderdukking de Palestijnen eindelijk een normaal leven te gunnen in hun eigen staat Palestina. De illegale joodse nederzettingen in Palestina hebben het leven van de Palestijnen ontwricht en hun land geroofd. Israel gaat ondanks internationale veroordeling door met het bouwen van nog meer van die nederzettingen. De grond hiervoor wordt met militair geweld van Palestijnse boeren geroofd.
Allerlei producten uit die nederzettingen worden in Nederland in de supermarkten verkocht. Daarbij wordt dan de foutieve herkomst “Israel” vermeld. Israel pleegt hiermee ook belastingfraude want het omzeilt zo de betaling van invoerrechten.
Wie zulke producten koopt steunt de mensenrechtenschendingen in bezet Palestina.
Twaalf actievoerders waren bij deze inspectie betrokken. Zes inspecteurs, herkenbaar aan hun outfit, gingen de winkel in om alle aangeboden artikelen te kontroleren op herkomst. Buiten werden flyers aan het publiek aangeboden waarop naast de reden van de actie ook de merken stonden afgebeeld die met niet moet kopen. Er werden 18 producten aangetroffen die mogelijk besmet zijn met mensenrechtenschendingen. Daaronder was fruit (zoals Jaffa’s, granaatappels en dadels), aardappelen, humus van het merk Sabra en vleesvervangers van het merk Tivall. Aan de filiaalmanager is een rapportage hiervan overhandigd en hem is verzocht deze producten uit de schappen te halen.
Deze inspectie was een gecombineerde actie van docP en het Haarlemse Breed Platform Palestina BPP. Hij zal op veel plaatsen in het land en bij alle supermarktketens worden herhaald. BDS is wereldwijd heel succesvol. Wat de internationale politiek, door de druk vanuit Amerika, nooit heeft gedurfd, lijkt BDS wel te lukken, Israel in het nauw brengen wegens zijn verwerpelijke kolonisatiepolitiek.

Eigenlijk een schande, dat ik u in onderstaande moet uitleggen, hoe fout dat is! Het Israëlische leger heeft vannacht opnieuw luchtaanvallen uitgevoerd op meerdere plekken in Gaza-Stad. In een korte verklaring spreekt het leger van “uitgebreide aanvallen” op “terroristische doelwitten” in de Gazastrook. Volgens Israël is daarbij 15 kilometer aan Hamas-tunnels vernietigd en negen woningen van vermoedelijke Hamas-commandanten.
Een vooraanstaande commandant van Islamitische Jihad is ook gedood bij een luchtaanval, meldt persbureau Reuters op basis van een bron binnen de groep en het Israëlische leger. Het leger houdt deze Abu Harbeed verantwoordelijk voor een reeks aanslagen met anti-tank-raketten.
Ook vanuit Gaza zijn vannacht raketten afgevuurd op Israëlische doelen. Volgens Israëlische media waren onder meer de zuidelijke steden Ashkelon en Beër Sjeva doelwit. Het is nog onduidelijk hoe groot de schade aan beide kanten is. Ook is er nog niets gemeld over slachtoffers.

In Gaza-Stad is in ieder geval één gebouw zwaar beschadigd. Bewoners zeggen tegen persbureau AP dat ze tien minuten voor de aanval zijn gewaarschuwd door het Israëlische leger, waardoor iedereen tijdig naar buiten kon komen. Veel van de luchtaanvallen door Israël troffen volgens hen akkers in de buurt.
Ook een sponsfabriek in Gaza werd geraakt door een luchtaanval. De brandweer probeert de grote brand die daarna uitbrak al uren onder controle te krijgen.
Volgens persbureau AP waren afgelopen nacht ongeveer tien minuten explosies te horen, en waren de luchtaanvallen zwaarder dan die op Gaza van dit weekend. In de nacht van zaterdag op zondag vielen daarbij volgens Palestijnse gezondheidsautoriteiten zeker 42 doden.
‘Zo lang als nodig’
Premier Netanyahu van Israël had gisteravond al aangekondigd dat de militaire operatie van het Israëlische leger tegen Hamas-doelen in de Gazastrook voorlopig niet voorbij zou zijn. Hamas is de militante organisatie die sinds 2007 de macht heeft in Gaza. Netanyahu zei dat het Israëlische leger “zo lang als nodig” actie zal ondernemen om de rust te herstellen.
Zaterdagavond had de Israëlische premier zich in soortgelijke bewoordingen uitgelaten. Daarop reageerde Hamas-leider Ismail Haniyeh dat het verzet van Hamas niet is gebroken.
Staakt-het-vuren
Ondertussen neemt de internationale druk toe om tot een staakt-het-vuren te komen. Zo spraken de vijftien leden van de VN-Veiligheidsraad gisteren in een digitale bijeenkomst hun zorgen uit over het escalerende conflict tussen Israël en de Palestijnen.
De raad slaagde er echter opnieuw niet in om met een gezamenlijke verklaring over het geweld te komen. Tot nu toe heeft de Amerikaanse delegatie zo’n verklaring tegengehouden. De Amerikanen zouden vrezen dat een veroordeling van het geweld hun bemiddeling tussen de twee partijen zou bemoeilijken. Zaterdag landde de Amerikaanse topdiplomaat Hady Amr in Tel Aviv, met als doel de partijen om de tafel te krijgen.
President Biden zei gisteravond in een vooraf opgenomen video dat zijn regering met Israëliërs en Palestijnen werkt aan “blijvende rust”. Beide partijen verdienen het om in veiligheid en zekerheid te leven en in dezelfde mate te genieten van vrijheid, welvaart en democratie, zei hij.
“Israël heeft denk ik nog een paar dagen de tijd gekregen van Amerika om zijn lijstje van doelwitten af te werken”, zei correspondent Ankie Rechess in het NOS Radio 1 Journaal. “De internationale druk wordt ook opgevoerd op Israël, dus het lijkt eigenlijk dat er een bestand of een wapenstilstand aan zit te komen.”
“Het gevaarlijkste moment is nu, want voordat een bestand er is, wil iedereen nog even doorgaan met laten zien wie de overwinning heeft gehaald”, aldus Rechess. “Als er dan een of andere aanval komt, van welke zijde dan ook, die een hoop slachtoffers eist, dan zijn we weer terug bij af en dan gaat het geweld gewoon weer door.”

Huisuitzettingen Vrijdagavond escaleerde opnieuw het geweld tussen Israëlische politie en Palestijnse demonstranten in Jeruzalem, vooral vanwege de dreigende huisuitzettingen van Palestijnse families in Oost-Jeruzalem.
Flits. Knal. Rennende en struikelende mensen, loeiende sirenes. Het is weer raak in Jeruzalem. Bij confrontaties tussen Palestijnen en de Israëlische politie bij de Al-Aqsamoskee in de oude stad en in de nabijgelegen wijk Sjeikh Jarrah zijn vrijdagavond zeker 205 Palestijnen en 17 Israëlische politieagenten gewond geraakt. De politie zette onder meer traangas, lawaaigranaten en rubberkogels in. Volgens de politie gooiden Palestijnse demonstranten met stenen en vuurwerk.
In de islamitische vastenmaand ramadan is het vaker onrustig in Jeruzalem, maar dit keer volgt escalatie op escalatie. Het begon met de afsluiting van de trappen naar de Damascuspoort, de belangrijkste ingang naar de oude stad. Die dienen in de ramadan als centraal plein voor de tienduizenden Palestijnen die naar de Al-Aqsamoskee komen om te bidden. Na protesten en geweld stelden de Israëlische autoriteiten de trappen weer open. Ook kwam de politie hardhandig tussenbeide toen ultrarechtse activisten een mars naar de oude stad organiseerden waarbij ze „dood aan de Arabieren” riepen en Palestijnen op straat aanvielen. De directe aanleiding voor de mars was een filmpje op sociale media van een Palestijnse jongen die een Joodse leeftijdgenoot een klap gaf.
Centraal in de recente onrust staat de dreigende huisuitzetting van vier Palestijnse families in de wijk Sjeikh Jarrah, vlakbij de oude binnenstad. Veertien families dreigen hun huizen te worden uitgezet, waarvan vier acuut. Jordanië, dat destijds het oostelijke deel van Jeruzalem beheerste, bouwde de huizen in 1956 samen met VN-organisatie UNRWA voor Palestijnse vluchtelingen. De inwoners van de wijk protesteren elke avond tegen de uitzettingen, daarbij gesteund door Joodse en Palestijnse activisten. Politieoptreden leidde de afgelopen week tot gewonden en arrestaties.
Stinkwater
Je weet dat je in de richting van Sjeikh Jarrah loopt dankzij de penetrante geur die hier al dagen hangt. De politie gebruikt stinkwater, een chemisch goedje dat niet uit kleren en huizen te krijgen is, tegen demonstranten.
Abed Fattah Eskafi (71) woont met dertien kinderen en kleinkinderen in het huis dat zijn familie destijds kreeg toegewezen, nadat ze in 1948 uit een wijk in West-Jeruzalem waren verdreven. Eskafi en zijn buren zijn al decennia in rechtszaken verwikkeld om hun huis te behouden. Sinds Israël in 1967 het oostelijke gedeelte van Jeruzalem heroverde en vervolgens annexeerde, eisen nationalistische Joodse organisaties de grond op omdat die vóór 1948 in bezit was van Joden. Volgens de Israëlische wet mogen Joodse Israëliërs die in de oorlog met de Arabische buurlanden zijn verdreven, hun bezit opeisen. Dat geldt echter niet voor de vele Palestijnen die hun grond en bezit kwijtraakten, zoals de Eskafi’s.
Ook hier wakkeren rechtse groeperingen het vuur met graagte aan. Donderdag zette een ultrarechts Knessetlid zijn tent op recht tegenover de nu bedreigde huizen, bij een huis waar al in 2009 Joodse bewoners in de plaats kwamen van Palestijnen. Het mondde uit in over en weer gesmijt met stoelen en stenen.
Vrijdag hebben zich tientallen Joodse activisten in hetzelfde huis verzameld. Zodra de schemering invalt, komen ze de straat op om luidkeels te bidden en zingen voor de sjabbat. Aan de overkant zitten de Palestijnse bewoners aan grote tafels voor de iftar, het breken van de vasten, dat eveneens met zonsondergang begint. Beide groepen proberen elkaar te overstemmen. Ertussen staan agenten van de Israëlische grenspolitie.
Volgens de VN-mensenrechtenraad zou uitzetting van de Palestijnse bewoners neerkomen op gedwongen verplaatsing, volgens mensenrechtenverdragen verboden. De Amerikaanse regering sprak vrijdag haar bezorgdheid uit over het escalerende geweld en ook over de dreigende uitzettingen in Sjeikh Jarrah.
‘Onroerendgoedkwestie’
De Palestijnse bewoners en hun medestanders zien de huisuitzettingen als deel van een grotere beweging om zoveel mogelijk Joodse Israëliërs te vestigen in Oost-Jeruzalem, dat de Palestijnen zien als de hoofdstad van een toekomstige Palestijnse staat. Israël beschouwt heel Jeruzalem als Israëls ondeelbare hoofdstad.
Palestijnse huizen in Oost-Jeruzalem worden met regelmaat gesloopt en in Palestijnse wijken betrekken steeds meer Joodse families Palestijnse huizen. „Ze willen geen Arabieren hier”, zegt Eskafi. „Ze verdrijven ons van hier, dan vanuit de volgende wijk, en ten slotte uit Al-Aqsa.” Israël ontkent dat. Het Israëlische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken stelde vrijdag dat de Palestijnen „een onroerend-goedkwestie tussen private partijen presenteren als een nationalistische kwestie, om geweld op te roepen.”
Veiligheidsdiensten en bewoners houden hun hart vast voor de komende dagen. Ook deze zaterdag zijn demonstraties aangekondigd in Israël en de Palestijnse gebieden. Volgens de militante beweging Hamas speelt de Israëlische premier Netanyahu „met vuur”.
Zondagavond en maandag is het Jeruzalemdag. Ultranationalistische Joden vieren dan dat de stad in 1967 werd ‘verenigd’ met een mars door de oude stad, waarbij ze nationalistische en anti-Arabische slogans roepen. De Israëlische politie adviseert Palestijnse winkeliers doorgaans hun zaak gesloten te houden om vernielingen te voorkomen, maar dit jaar valt het samen met één van de belangrijkste en drukste avonden van de ramadan.
Maandag bepaalt het Hooggerechtshof bovendien of de bewoners van Sjeikh Jarrah nog in beroep mogen tegen hun uitzetting.

De Israëlische veiligheidsdiensten hebben herhaaldelijk onaangekondigd en buitensporig geweld ingezet tegen Palestijnse demonstranten in het bezette Oost-Jeruzalem. Dit volgde op vier dagen vol geweld waarin 840 Palestijnen gewond raakten. Ook raakten volgens de Israëlische politie ten minste 21 Israëlische politieagenten en zeven Israëlische burgers gewond.
De Palestijnen demonstranten protesteren tegen gedwongen huisuitzettingen in de wijk Sheikh Jarrah. Amnesty International roept de Israëlische autoriteiten op onmiddellijk een einde te maken aan deze huisuitzettingen, en aan het voortdurende verdrijven van Palestijnen uit Oost-Jeruzalem.
Bij de laatste escalatie vuurden gewapende Palestijnse groepen raketten af op Israël. Daarbij raakte ten minste een Israëli gewond. Er zijn berichten dat bij wraakaanvallen door Israël op Gaza verschillende mensen omkwamen. Amnesty International roept alle partijen op om het internationale humanitaire recht te respecteren en alle mogelijke voorzorgsmaatregelen te treffen om burgerslachtoffers te voorkomen.
Grof en lichtzinnig geweld
‘Bewijs dat Amnesty International heeft verzameld, toont een angstaanjagend patroon van Israëlische troepen die de afgelopen dagen grof en lichtzinnig geweld gebruikten tegen grotendeels vreedzame Palestijnse demonstranten’, zegt Saleh Higazi van Amnesty International. ‘Sommige van de mensen die gewond raakten bij het geweld in Oost-Jeruzalem waren omstanders of mensen die aan Ramadan-gebeden meededen.
‘Dit recente geweld laat weer eens duidelijk zien hoe de illegale Israëlische campagne van uitbreiding van de Israëlische nederzettingen voortduurt, en dat er een toename is van gedwongen uitzettingen van Palestijnse bewoners – zoals in Sheikh Jarrah – om plaats te maken voor Israëlische kolonisten. Deze gedwongen uitzettingen maken deel uit van een voortdurend patroon in Sheikh Jarrah. Het zijn grove schendingen van het internationale recht en oorlogsmisdaden.’
Ooggetuigenverslagen en video’s en foto’s die Amnesty-onderzoekers maakten laten zien hoe de Israëlische troepen tijdens gewelddadige aanvallen op de al-Aqsa-moskee herhaaldelijk buitenproportioneel en onwettig geweld gebruikten om demonstranten uiteen te jagen. Ook voerden ze willekeurige aanvallen uit op vreedzame demonstranten in Sheikh Jarrah.
Onwettig gebruik van geweld
Sinds het begin van de Ramadan op 13 april liepen de spanningen in Oost-Jeruzalem op. Palestijnen protesteerden tegen de Israëlische beperkingen die hun toegang tot de hoofdingang tot de Oude Stad beperkten. Op 26 april trokken de Israëlische autoriteiten deze beperkingen weer in, als antwoord op de voortdurende demonstraties. Daarnaast zijn mensen kwaad over de aanstaande plannen om vier Palestijnse gezinnen uit Sheikh Jarrah uit hun huis te zetten om plaats te maken voor Israëlische kolonisten.
Op 7 mei bereikten de spanningen hun kookpunt, toen meer dan 170 Palestijnen gewond raakten bij een aanval van Israëlische troepen op de al-Aqsa-moskee in een poging biddende mensen en demonstranten uiteen te jagen. Daarbij schoten ze met 40mm kinetic impact projectiles (KIPs) en concussion granaten op het publiek, dat bijeen was gekomen voor het laatste vrijdaggebed van de Ramadan.
Een Palestijnse journalist die ter plekke was, beschrijft hoe Israëlische soldaten tekeer gingen en projectielen en traangas afvuurden. Hij vertelde ook hoe ze de kliniek bij de moskee bestormden en demonstranten sloegen. Hij zei tegen Amnesty: ‘Ik doe al 10 jaar verslag van gebeurtenissen in Jeruzalem… En ik ben nog nooit in mijn hele leven zo bang geweest. Iedereen was doelwit. Ik zou willen zeggen dat de beschietingen willekeurig waren, maar dat zou een leugen zijn. Ze wisten precies op wie en wat ze hun kogels en granaten richtten. De meeste mensen werden beschoten in hun bovenlichamen (ogen, gezicht, borst).’ De journalist werd zelf ook geraakt in zijn rug, terwijl hij zijn camera omhoog hield en probeerde het gebied te verlaten.
Als reactie gooiden demonstranten bij al-Aqsa stenen en staken ze vuren aan, terwijl de Israëlische strijdkrachten op paarden en in gevechtsuitrusting schoten met schokgranaten om hen af te schrikken.
Bestorming van 10 mei
Op 10 mei raakten meer dan 300 Palestijnse demonstranten gewond toen de Israëlische strijdkrachten voor de tweede keer in een paar dagen het gebied rond de al-Aqsa-moskee bestormden. Een woordvoerder van de Rode Halve Maan vertelde Amnesty dat het geweld had geleid tot de ziekenhuisopname van ten minste 250 Palestijnen. Zeven van hen verkeren in kritieke toestand.
Een ooggetuige vertelde hoe Israëlische soldaten ramen braken en traangas en schokgranaten afvuurden. De mensen in de gebouwen hadden moeite om nog te kunnen ademhalen.
Volgens een andere getuige ter plekke begonnen de Israëlische soldaten vanaf een dak traangas af te vuren, voordat meer troepen het al-Haram-plein bestormden vanuit de Magharbeh-toegangspoort. ‘Ze kwamen steeds dichterbij, en drukten mensen de al-Aqsa-moskee in. Ze sloten de deuren af met metalen kettingen… en braken vervolgens een raam om traangas naar de mensen binnen te gooien die letterlijk opgesloten zaten met weinig ruimte om te ademen of medische hulp te krijgen… Daarnaast begonnen ze ook nog rubberen kogels af te vuren op mensen die binnen aan het bidden waren’, zei hij.
Hij gaf ook aan gezien te hebben hoe Israëlische soldaten omstanders sloegen en auto’s stopten die gewonden wegbrachten. Ze namen foto’s van de gewonde mensen voordat ze verder mochten. Hij werd zelf in zijn borst geraakt toen hij naar een medische hulpverlener liep die zelf gewond was.
Sheihk Jarrah
De afgelopen week hielden Palestijnen in de Sheikh Jarrah-buurt iedere nacht demonstraties in reactie op de dreiging van aanstaande gedwongen huisuitzettingen. Amnesty documenteerde daarbij willekeurige arrestaties van vreedzame demonstranten, buitensporig geweld, het willekeurige gebruik van geluids- en schokgranaten en het willekeurig bespuiten van demonstranten en huizen met stinkwater (met de geur van stinkdieren) uit waterkanonnen.
Vier Palestijnse gezinnen uit de buurt lopen risico gedwongen hun huizen uit te worden gezet nadat een rechtbank in Jeruzalem hun beroep tegen een uitzettingsbevel afwees. Het kolonisten-bedrijf Nahalat Shimon International heeft verschillende rechtszaken aangespannen om de huizen van tientallen gezinnen in Sheikh Jarrah in beslag te nemen. Dit doen ze door discriminerend wetten te gebruiken, zoals de ‘Legale en Administratieve Zaken Wet’ en de ‘Wet over het Bezit van Afwezigen’ uit 1950. Op basis van deze wetten nemen ze Palestijns land of eigendom in beslag en dragen het over aan groepen kolonisten. Het gedwongen uitzetten van de bevolking die oner een bezetting leeft is verboden onder internationaal humanitaire recht en vormt een oorlogsmisdaad volgens het Statuut van Rome van het Internationale Strafhof.
Amnesty bij willekeurige aanval
Amnesty-onderzoekers zagen op 9 mei een willekeurige aanval van Israëlische troepen op een groep vreedzame demonstranten in Sheihk Jarrah. De Israëlische troepen kwamen aan kort voor iftar – de avondmaaltijd in de Ramadan. Na de maaltijd vormden een tiental vreedzame demonstranten een cirkel en begonnen ze leuzen te zingen tegen de plannen om Palestijnse gezinnen uit te zetten. De demonstranten waren ten minste tien meter verwijderd van de Israëlische soldaten, die dichtbij gestationeerd waren in het huis van een Israëlische kolonist. Kort daarna vielen de Israëlische troepen de demonstranten aan. Op paarden reden ze naar de menigte. Een man die hinkte van de pijn zei dat hij door de politiepaarden vertrapt was terwijl hij probeerde weg te rennen. Bewoners werden tegen de muren van hun huizen gedrukt en vijf mannen werden willekeurig gearresteerd.
De Israëlische soldaten begonnen de mensen te duwen en slaan – onder hen was een Amnesty-onderzoeker die de demonstratie aan het monitoren was. Rond 10 uur ’s avonds brachten ze waterkanonnen met stinkdierwater en geluidsgranaten en begonnen willekeurig te schieten op de demonstranten.
Arrestaties op 6 mei
Osama Dweik werd op 6 mei gearresteerd tijdens een nachtelijke demonstratie in Sheikh Jarrah, toen de Israëlische politie plotseling een groep demonstranten aanviel en hem meteen oppakte. Op het politiebureau zag hij hoe de politie vier Palestijnen die waren opgepakt bij opstanden bij de Damascus-poort en in Sheikh Jarrah trapten en sloegen met wapenstokken. Die nacht werden nog zeven andere mensen in Sheikh Jarrah opgepakt.
Geweld op 7 mei
Gil Hammerschlag, een Israëlische activist die op 7 mei demonstreerde tegen de gedwongen uitzettingen in Sheikh Jarrah, werd geduwd en getrapt door Israëlische soldaten die vanaf minder dan 10 meter afstand geluidsgranaten gooiden naar vreedzame demonstranten.
Op dezelfde dag werd een Palestijnse man van middelbare leeftijd in zijn dij geraakt door een schokgranaat. Een fotograaf die ook ter plekke was vertelde hoe Israëlische troepen, ook politie te paard, een vreedzame menigte aanviel nadat een van de demonstranten een waterfles naar hen had gegooid.
Boodschap van een bedreigde bewoner
Nabil el-Kurd is een van de bewoners die gedwongen zijn huis uitgezet kan worden in Sheikh Jarrah. Hij vertelde Amnesty International:
‘Sheikh Jarrah heeft een bericht voor de hele wereld, en voor de Amerikaanse regering, het parlement in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, het Franse parlement, het parlement van de EU, het Internationale Strafhof: wat er met ons gebeurt, is een oorlogsmisdaad. Het is niet slechts een uitzetting, maar een oorlogsmisdaad. Vergeet dat niet. Ik weet niet waarom de hele wereld toekijkt naar wat er gebeurt en Israël ermee weg laat komen. Het is tijd dat ze stoppen Israël te verwennen.’
Amnesty’s oproep
‘Amnesty-onderzoekers zagen afkeurenswaardig gedrag bij de veiligheidsdiensten in Sheikh Jarrah. Onder meer willekeurige aanvallen op vreedzame demonstranten die opkomen voor hun rechten en roepen om het respecteren van internationale wetgeving. De Israëlische autoriteiten de geplande huisuitzettingen onmiddellijk stoppen in plaats van de rechten van de bewoners van Sheikh Jarrah en activistennog verder te schenden’, zegt Saleh Higazi.
Amnesty International roept de internationale gemeenschap op om Israël ter verantwoording te roepen voor de systematische schendingen onder internationaal recht.
‘Israël mag niet doorgaan met deze razernij tegen Palestijnen die slechts hun bestaansrecht verdedigen en demonstreren tegen hun gedwongen uitzetting. Simpele uitingen van bezorgdheid over Israëls verontachtzaming van zijn verplichtingen onder internationaal recht zijn niet genoeg. Er moeten duidelijke en sterke afkeuringen komen van deze overduidelijke schendingen, zoals gedwongen uitzettingen, de uitbreiding van illegale nederzettingen en de wrede onderdrukking van mensen die demonstreren tegen deze ernstige schendingen.’
We roepen nu de leden van de VN-Veiligheidsraad op om een open sessie te organiseren, en de Speciale Coördinator voor het Vredesproces in het Midden-Oosten om de lidstaten te instrueren.

EEN BOEKJE OPEN OVER UW ”VRIENDIN” GAL GADOT!
Want deze Israelische filmactrice,Gal Gadot, die u uw ”Vriendin” noemt, heeft nare kanten.
Niet alleen heeft zij gediend in het Israelische leger [3], dat zoals u weet, of althans behoort te weten, een bezettingsleger is, met alle daaraan gekoppelde onderdrukking en terreur [4], het is nog erger.
Want nu kan men nog aanvoeren, dat militaire dienstplicht in Israel verplicht is en dat niet iedere Israelische soldaat, hoewel deze wel de bezetting van de Palestijnse gebieden in stand houdt, zich per definitie heeft schuldig gemaakt aan oorlogsmisdaden. Klopt.
ECHTER: Madame filmactrice Gal Gadot heeft zich van een weerzinwekkende kant laten zien door de moordende Israelische aanval op Gaza ”Protective Edge” uit juli-augustus 2014, te ondersteunen!
Ik citeer de Britse krant The Independent:
”As the conflict between Israel and Gaza worsened, she uploaded a photograph of herself praying with her daughter Alma.“I am sending my love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens,” she wrote. “Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children…We shall overcome!!! Shabbat Shalom! #weareright #freegazafromhamas #stopterror #coexistance #loveidf”” [5]
Nou laat ik de politieke en verzetsbeweging Hamas even buiten beschouwing, zonder te ontkennen, dat Hamas zich zeker ook schuldig maakt aan ongerechtigheden [6] , maar daar gaat het hier niet om.
Gadot verzwijgt niet alleen het feit, dat Israel bezettingsmacht is sinds 1967 en zich heeft schuldig gemaakt-en nog doet- aan onder andere misdaden zoals foltering, etnische zuiveringen, landroof [bouw en uitbreiding in bezet Palestijns gebied gebouwde illegale nederzettingen], apartheid en oorlogsmisdaden [7]
In die specifieke Israelische militaire aanval op Gaza, waarvoor zij met haar [onschuldige] dochtertje bidt [wat een goddeloos Gebed!] [8],
heeft Israel zich schuldig gemaakt aan zware oorlogsmisdaden:
In de aanval op Gaza in 2014 , waarvoor la Gadot heeft gebeden, zijn in twee maanden tijd 1391 Palestijnse burgers gedood, waaronder 526 kinderen [9], een VN school werd gebombardeerd [10], een ziekenhuis werd beschoten [11], moet ik doorgaan?
Ik denk, dat dit wel een Beeld geeft.
Wie een dergelijke misdadige aanval verdedigt, applaudisseert dus voor het doden van ongewapende burgers en kinderen en beschietingen van scholen en ziekenhuizen.
En dan durft u iemand met een dergelijk wereldbeeld nog uitgebreid
te prijzen!
EPILOOG
Als u doorgaat deze filmactrice te promoten, overdreven aandacht teschenken en nog erger: Uw ”Vriendin” te noemen, ziet u er, als Filmkrant, dus geenbeen in, iemand, die oorlogsmisdaden steunt, beschietingen op scholen en ziekenhuizen, tot uw ”Vriendenkring” te rekenen? Wat maakt dat u?
Denk daar maar eens over na en houd ermee op, iemand, die het Gebed der Goddelozen bidt [12] en misdadige aanvallen steunt [13] een positieve promotie te geven, want het werpt een onuitwisbare Smet op u als TV krant!
En vertel mij nu niet het Sprookje, dat u niet aan politiek doet, want dat doet u, door een aanhangster van oorlogsmisdaden positieve promotie te geven.
Zou u dat ook doen, als een Noord Koreaanse filmactrice het Noord Koreaanse leger aanprees? Denk daarover na en hou ermee op u over deze filmactrice, die morele
opvattingen van een Jakhals heeft, het moreel niet waard is, anders dan zakelijk uit te laten. Denk aan het spreekwoord:
”ZEG MIJ WIE UW VRIENDEN ZIJN EN IK ZAL U ZEGGEN WIE U BENT”
En laat ik Gadot NIET pontificaal in een van uw toekomstige
bladen tegenkomen, want zolang u dat doet, blijf ik u bestoken.
