”DON”T BE AFRAID. I WON’T KILL YOU.
YOU’RE A WOMAN”
Sigolène Vinson, one of the survivors of the Charlie Hebdo massacre, has given an account of how her life was spared
Charlie Hebdo, a somewhat obscure magazine, [1] is suddenly is an
international star.
At wednesday 7 january, two masked gunmen killed ten members
of the Charlie Hebdo editorial staff and two police officers, during
an editorial meeting. [2]
Soon international political reactions burst out, from over the whole
world. [3]
The Dutch King Willem Alexander showed ”very shocked”, as the Dutch
prime minister Rutte [4] and the other heads of State.
Leitmotiv was the criminal act and, in various terms ”the attack
against freedom of expression, a precious fundamental freedom which we must continue to defend.” [5]
One of the few reactions, which looked farther, was the Indonesian,
which expressed, except a concdemnation  ” fear that Wednesday’s deadly shooting attack on the office of the French magazine, Charlie Hebdo, will harm Muslims around the world and hope the international community will be fair with this incident and not generalize it as part of Islam” [6]
Iran pointed out, that ” “making use of freedom of expression… to humiliate the monotheistic religions and their values and symbols is unacceptable.” [7]
And of course the Dutch extreme-right Europese political gangster,
PVV fuhrer G, Wilders [8], as other European racist scum, uttered
their hatespeech and war language against Islam and muslims. [9]
A ”Charlie Hausse” was created and millions in Europe
stood and shouted ”I am Charlie”
Cartoonists published more or less sordid cartoons [some
downright hatespeech] [10] and spontaneous ”I am Charlie”
demonstrations were held. [11]
This was only a prelude to the great Paris Charlie Hebdo March.
But there also were otherl sounds:
Morocco’s Foreign Minister Salahedinne Mezouar didn’t participate
with the Paris Charflie Hebdo March, because cartoons of the
Prophet Mohammed would be carried. [12]
The unity for Charlie Hebdo was not so broad as was
presented in de media:
An investigation of the Journal du Dimanche showed, that
four out of 10 French people think the magazine
Charlie Hebdo should not have published the Prophet
Mohammed cartoons because of the offense to muslims. [13]
A RIGHTFUL ”CHARLIE HAUSSE”?
OR IS THERE SOMETHING ROTTEN AT THE BOTTOM
OF ”CHARLIE”
Of course the killings of 12 people are never to be justified.
Understandable, thjat people want to show their grief and
solidarity.
But there is a big difference between showing your indignation
over a barbarous act and declaring solidarity with a magazine.
Because shouting ”Je suis Charlie” means identification
with the Charlie Hebd Magazine.
AND THAT’S THE POINT!
Because:
What is Charlie Hebdo and do they deserve solidarity?

English history/[NevillFeast]/Letter from Richard, Earl of Cambridge [father of Richard, Duke of York], to King Henry V/Confession and plea for mercy

LETTER OF CONFESSION AND A PLEA FOR MERCY
OF RICHARD OF CONISBURGH [3TH EARL OF CAMBRIDGE], FATHER TO
RICHARD, DUKE OF YORK, FOR HIS ROLE IN THE SOUTHAMPTON PLOT
AGAINST KING HENRY V
Richard, Earl of Cambridge, was executed nevertheless in 1415,
leaving his son,  later the  Duke of York behind as an orphan, since his
mother, Anne Mortimer, died, bringing him into the world.
 MY REMARKS
SEE FURTHER:

While hunting down the full text of the Manner & Guiding, I stumbled across these two (too?) sad pieces of correspondence.

(from Ellis’s Original letters)

In 1415, when his son, Richard (later duke of York), was four years old, Richard, earl of Cambridge, was “accused of a treasonable conspiracy, indicted, convicted and beheaded” (p45). This has come to be known as the Southampton Plot. During his captivity he wrote two letters to the king, Henry V: a letter of confession and a plea for mercy, “but neither had any effect upon Henry” (p45).

The Wars of the Roses/[NevillFeast]/York’s parliamentary pardon

THE WARS OF THE ROSES

An indispensable site for anyone researching the Wars of the Roses: British History Online. Here you can find, among other things, the Rolls of Parliament for the reigns of Henry VI, Edward IV and Richard III. There’s a lot you can access for free, but getting the full benefit of it costs around £36 a year. I really can’t do without it.

Immediately after the first battle of St Albans, York, Salisbury and Warwick attended the King in his quarters at St Albans Abbey. Abbot Whetehamstede gives York a hell of a speech denouncing the dead Somerset and urging Henry to ‘rejoice’ at both Somerset’s death and York’s triumph. “I am, and always was, and all my followers are and were your faithful – indeed, your most faithful – liegemen; and we will always remain…” York had been insisting the truth of this for some years now, so determined to get his point across that twice he stood with a sizeable band of armed men, demanding to be given access to the king.

The Wars of the Roses/[A Nevill Feast]/Letter of Richard, Duke of York to Henry Holland, Duke of Exeter

THE WARS OF THE ROSES

In searching for Cecily Nevill’s letter to Margaret of Anjou, I also found this. I’m assuming that the confusion about its intended recipient is well and truly cleared up. Rawcliffe* thought it was a letter to Edward, earl of March, though it would have been extraordinary if it was. But as she also is prepared to believe that Edward threatened to march on London at the head of an army at the age of ten, her confusion is perhaps not quite so surprising. Bearing in mind that around this time Edward and his brother Edmund sent their father a letter asking for help against the bullying Crofts, I think that if he’d had an army powerful enough to threaten London he’d have been able to sort this out himself! Pugh** (correctly) links it with Henry Holland, duke of Exeter, who was, at the time it was written, fomenting rebellion (or trying to) in the north of England alongside those two well known rapscallions, Thomas and Richard Percy.  (below is the version as found in Rawcliffe.)

The letter is dated 8 May 1454.

ENGLISH HISTORY/THE WARS OF THE ROSES/MARGARET OF ANJOU AND THE DUKE

OF YORK, TWO MAJOR PLAYERS

CONCERNING PROPAGANDA IN HISTORICAL WRITING AND
HISTORICAL VIEWS ON THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN POLITICS
Dear Readers
´´Queen of Last Hopes´´, fictional historical novel  of writer Susan Higginbotham,
about the life of Margaret of Anjou, wife of the medieval English
King Henry VI, was one of the books, which fascinated me last year
2014.
Red theme in the life of Margaret of Anjou were the Wars of Roses,
the fight to the death for the English throne between the Houses of
Lancaster  and York .
It´s such a passionate period of history, that one nearly can´t avoid to
raise sympathy either for the Lancasters or the Yorks.
However, of importance is to take a historically balanced stand,
acknowledging that on both sides there were cruelties and injustice,
and that human beings are mostly a mixture of light and dark sides.
But that aside.
HISTORICAL VIEWS ABOUT WOMEN, INVOLVED
IN POLITICS:
SUSAN HIGGINBOTHAM’S CONTRIBUTION
In her book and articles, Susan Higginbotham struggles against

an important contribution,

not only out of
historical accuracy, but because she points out
the medieval ( and also later) demonization  of women,
who dared to participate in politics, which was considered
as ”men’s affairs’, especially armed struggle.
Were those women, who participated in politics, saints?
Of course not, they were hard, but not harder than the men
involved.
That’s the point here.
Higginbotham’s contribution is, that she raises this
important point.
HISTORICAL ACCURACY
SUSAN HIGGINBOTHAM
However, of importance is to take a historically balanced stand
and there comes my criticism.

In her book ´´Queen of Last Hopes´´, Higginbotham

Higginbotham accomplishes her
crusade against the exaggerated negative role of Margaret of Anjou by
on the contrary, picturing her great enemy the Duke of York  as a cardboard
villain, who was after the throne from the beginning and even
wanted to kill King Henry VI and Queen Margaret for that.
I think, that is not historically right.
That´s why I wrote a letter to Mrs Higginbotham.
See for that letter the following link, scroll to below in the link.
But to get more information about the causes of the
Wars of Roses and the major players, I take you
to a journey to the past.
I warn you
It is a long piece of reading.
But realize, that it is a journey of 500
years ago and that takes time.
Go with me on the journey.
