President Obama’s call to end indefinite detention at Guantanamo is encouraging after his long silence on the issue. Though he blamed Congress for the problems at Guantanamo, there are actions he could have taken and can still take now to end indefinite detention there.

While the loss of life at Gdeim Izik is deplorable, the prosecution failed to establish after 26 months of pretrial detention for most defendants a credible case that they were responsible for the violence.

(Rabat) – A Moroccan military court has sentenced 25 Sahrawis to prison, including nine to life sentences, without looking into their allegations that their confessions were extracted under torture and other forms of coercion. The defendants include several advocates of human rights and independence for Western Sahara. The confessions were apparently the primary, if not the only, evidence against them, as the court’s written judgment, released the week of March 18, 2013, makes clear.

What do you say to a man who is crying from his pain because he hasn’t drunk or eaten in days? Please stop, now? Or: Keep going!

Sayam Uddin Nessar (1970) from Afghanistan hasn’t drunk anything since Tuesday and was already on hunger strike since Monday. During the visiting hour on Saturday he lets people read a letter he has written. It says: ‘Under no circumstances do l want to be admitted to a hospital. I also refuse any artificial feeding, l do not agree to receive fluids via an IV, l do not agree to receive any medically necessary drugs.’

‘Either l’m released, or l’m leaving the detention center, in Rotterdam, in a coffin’ he says with a dry mouth. Every five minutes he reaches for his side, his kidneys protest. That was Saturday afternoon. Yesterday morning he called to say he would be taken to the hospital that day.

Wat zeg je tegen een man die tot tranen toe crepeert doordat hij al dagen niet eet of drinkt? Stop alsjeblieft, nu? Of: hou vol!

De Afghaan Sayam Uddin Nessar (1970) drinkt sinds dinsdag niets meer en begon op maandag al een hongerstaking. Zaterdag laat hij tijdens het bezoekuur een brief op een A4′tje lezen die hij heeft opgesteld.
Er staat: ‘Ik wens onder geen beding in een ziekenhuis te worden opgenomen. Daarbij weiger ik ook kunstvoeding toegediend te krijgen, ik ga niet akkoord met het toedienen van vocht via een infuus, ik ga niet akkoord met het toedienen van medisch noodzakelijke geneesmiddelen.’

De Afghaan Sayam Uddin Nessar is gisteren tegen zijn zin overgebracht van de vreemdelingendetentie in Rotterdam naar het justitieel medisch centrum in Scheveningen. Nessar drinkt sinds dinsdag niet meer. Maandag begon hij een hongerstaking. NRC Handelsblad publiceert vandaag een interview met hem.

Hongerstaking vluchtelingen/Verklaring Nessar [Overgenomen van Deportatieverzet]/Nessar: Nieren geven het op

Nessar, de woordvoerder van de groep hongerstakers in detentiecentrum Rotterdam die gisternacht werd geïsoleerd van de groep, bereikt een kritiek stadium. Na vier dagen dorststaking beginnen zijn nieren het op te geven. Ondanks dat weigert hij om in het ziekenhuis opgenomen te worden. Hij heeft ook verklaard dat hij geen kunstvoeding of medicijnen toegediend wil krijgen.

De hongerstakers hebben gevraagd om onafhankelijke artsen die hen kunnen bezoeken en evt. kunnen begeleiden. Hierop hebben wij een team van artsen vanuit verschillende disciplines samengesteld, die dit weekend naar binnen in de detentiecentra willen.
Detentiecentrum Rotterdam stelt dat er reeds een onafhankelijke arts naar de honger en dorst stakers gekeken, gesproken en onderzocht heeft. Deze dame heb ik gesproken, maar blijkt zeer nauwe banden met justitie te hebben en is dus niet onafhankelijk.
